I was bowling a few sliders at a batsman the other day and found a few of them were seaming around a bit (it's quite a hard seamy artificial surface in our nets) - I even bowled one that seamed back in like a skiddy wrong 'un. No idea how I did it sadly, but it was definitely seaming rather than...
I really don't rate Woolmer's description of the magnus effect and drift. It strikes me he simply hasn't got his head round it himself, and given the pace-crazed times he coached in, and the lack of any great spin tradition in South Africa where he did a lot of coaching, I'm not surprised the...
Hello all, hope you're all well and I was sorry to hear about Dave's kid getting hurt.
Anyway, I'm wondering what it is I'm doing wrong when it comes to learning the wrong 'un, and whether it really ought to be taking me this long to get it. My problem at the moment is I just can't bowl one...
Have a look at this, with Warne against NZ: http://www.youtube.com/embed/tMsL0s6_aRs
All the little "Oh"s and "Ooh"s, and the odd field change, culminate in Gilchrist having a little giggle leading directly to the batsman feeling pressured to cash in on at least one juicy full-toss and getting...
Yeah practise is the main thing. You need to get a really solid consistency in your practise and if you can do that then you'll be more reliable in matches when the pressure is on, and it also helps with confidence. You can't afford to have to think too much about technique in matches as that...
Well some days I like to wear long sleeves to keep my arms a little warmer, or perhaps to keep the sun off them. Graham Swann always wears long sleeves and I don't think there's any way you could accuse him of chucking. People go on about it too much and I think it's a bit of a red herring -...
I always bowl with my thumb on the ball but it has little to do in the actual bowling of the ball, It's just there to stop the ball wobbling about as I run in and roll my arm over. I have quite a relaxed grip though.
Great to see some footage of Mailey, and interesting to see that he (like a few of the bowlers there) seems to have an extra bound before the delivery stride. I'm going to try and work that into my own run-up to see if it helps me get side-on without the diagonal run-up. I also enjoyed...
If you lot are all going to start threads about various spinners, I'm not going to let my beloved Mailey be forgotten!
Arthur Alfred Mailey was a right-handed leg-break/googly bowler for NSW and Australia playing First Class cricket from 1912 to 1930 during which he played 21 Tests from 1920...
The thing is though, these guys are pros, with experienced coaches and slo-mo video analysis, and there are a LOT of them bowling with a scrambled seam. I can't help but suspect that not only are they aware of it, they're doing it quite deliberately. It's usually the ones who don't turn the ball...
It's impossible for your conscious brain to process all these different aspects fast enough, as it can only really process one thing at a time, while your subconscious can process a lot of things simultaneously so it allows you to bowl in a relaxed, effective way. Find a copy of "Bounce" by...
That looks like a very good action, I can't see anything obviously wrong with it. Love the way you totally baffled the 'keeper with the first ball!!!
The only issue I'd flag up is that through not having a crease to aim at you may be bowling no-balls. It certainly looks like you are. If you...
Just to give you all a heads up, Ashley Mallett's writen an article on Cricinfo where he critiques and advises Nathan Lyon. I've just read it and it's an absolute MUST READ: http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/543815.html
I think it depends how good the captain is at making sure everyone gets a reasonable chance, and that in turn relies on a team that wants a fun game and is prepared to sacrifice the odd win. That said, if a draw is possible then you often get some of the lesser teams batting to survive, and...
I'm going to play Devil's advocate and say that if you have GENUINE pace you may want to consider sticking to that. Spin is a skill that is learnt (after a lot of practise) but pace has much more to do with physical attributes that some have and most never will. I don't know where you're from...
I wouldn't worry about it. Woolmer was a great coach, to be sure, but from reading his book and watching his videos he seemed to know as much about spin as I do about flower arranging. His analysis totally fails to recognise that the ball spends a significant proportion of its flight travelling...
I'm not by any means a great batsman (not enough experience yet) but the thing that has helped me most is to stop thinking about moving my feet and instead think about moving my head. Once I do that my feet just follow naturally - if they didn't I'd fall over!
