    Wrist Spin Bowling (part Five)

Due to weather and other cancellations I had my first game in a few weeks today. Only bowled 3 overs, came away with 1 wicket for 15 runs. The medium pacer at the other end completed a 5 wicket haul during my spell and we won the game by bowling them out for around 85 (with them chasing 128...

Not to be, eh. England messed up in the first two tests and left themselves too much to do. The decisions to declare under 400, with no threat of rain, and then bat on to nearly 600 knowing there was two days of rain coming are inexplicable. Not that I think it would have made any difference...

It was absolutely brutal last week. The ground is in a unique location, at the foot of a valley surrounded by hills a couple of miles off the coast. The wind was coming in from the sea and picking up pace as it rolled down the valley and was directly head on as I was bowling. It was...

Ashes has been scintillating. Would be great if it was 2-2 heading to the Oval, that's what the fans and the series deserve. Both my matches cancelled this weekend. I'm grateful for a week off.

It was definitely right to take me off. It's not the first time he's been involved in something like that, though. Earlier in the season, he was captain and put me onto bowl. The first over i took a wicket, the second over went for a couple of fours and he took me off. I just don't think...

Thanks for your reply mate. I don't know if I've done the right thing and am being too precious. I guess he was honest, at least, but I felt like shit after that and didn't want to be there.

Yesterday was a total washout. No game due to heavy rain. Had a bad experience in a friendly today, an away game. We were bowling first and there was a fierce headwind from the end I was bowling into. They were four wickets down and two heavy hitters were in, one I knew the other I didn't...

I had a league match today, 40 overs. Our captain won the toss and, having saw us bowl the opposition out cheaply the week before, elected to bowl. It rained pretty much all match after the first 10 overs. We came off for a bit, then went back out and just played through the drizzle for the...

My flipper used to have some offspin, but through regular practice of it I've now got it going straight say 8 or 9 times out of 10. The odd one will break a little like a skiddy off break. If I practice it enough then yeah I find it easier to get big side spin on a googly than with a leg break.

Do you practice your flipper hand to hand at home? Two things really helped with mine - hand to hand practice and regular press ups.

Had an organised net session at our club tonight, first time I've bowled at team mates in a while and some of them the first time ever. We only have one lane so pretty busy. I batted first and approached it like it was a match. Nobody hit my stumps, I kept the ball down for the most part. I...

I just bowl the odd few every net session, not that many. It's a pleasing delivery and I do want the psychological advantage over the batsman of turning it both ways, but like you say it's not worth ruining your stock ball over.

Yeah, my googly comes out slower than my leg break (which itself isn't quick). I think it's just a matter of practice and timing, but I don't want to over practice googlies because I think it will deteriorate my leg break. So a bit slower and loopier is fine for me.

I had another league match today away at a ground I'd not played at before, tucked away somewhere you'd never know it was there. Spectacular ground, really nice. Very windy day with a strong crosswind on the wicket. We lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Openers did well dislodging three...

Hopefully the stringent rules will ease as time goes on. I think they got the hint I wasn't happy because they were more amenable today, and opened them during the game. Both my matches were cancelled due to lack of players last week and yesterday's league match was cancelled for the same...

We've got a new net at our club, but it's always padlocked and today they wouldn't let me use it when there was a first team game on. It's not in the line of sight of the batsmen. I asked if I could have a key so that I could come and go as I please, they said no. Just so mean. I go to a...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (part Five)

I basically lost my rhythm for a few weeks there, starting in the third over of a 9 over spell a couple of games back, and I've only just got it back. It's like golfer yips. It also felt like googly syndrome, but it wasn't googly syndrome because I couldn't bowl my googly or flipper...

I've got my mojo back in the nets tonight, I do believe.

Bad game for me yesterday. 3 overs 22 runs and taken off. The team won, and I was happy for everyone else, but my own performance sucked. Run out for 0 by a guy who wanted to take a second run, I didn't want it but he set off and I was stranded. I knew I was likely to have a bad time bowling...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (part Five)

I've still only had one catch taken from my bowling this season. It's not that they're being dropped either, just when it does go in the air it has evaded fielders and there haven't been that many airy shots overall. I think as the season goes on the pitches will harden and I'll start...
