Australia in New Zealand

Re: Australia in New Zealand

And we're back out on the ground. The game is now a 34-over match, Australia require 200 from 34 overs. Powerplay 1 will be seven overs, the bowling powerplay will be four overs but the batting powerplay will only be three.

Four bowlers can bowl 7 overs but one bowler can only bowl 6.

Haddin out for a first ball duck to Bond, 1/2 in the first over.

Vettori strikes again getting Ponting out LBW after surviving a plumb non-decision earlier.

What a disgraceful Duckworth lewis calculation, someone explain that to me, now.

It's not that unreasonable. Don't forget it's percentage based, and 39 runs is a pretty sizable portion. The rates they use are based on average scoring rates for ODIs, so if the purportedly best ODI team in the world can't beat NZ then it's their problem - not DL's.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

My point is that New Zealand were bowled out in 44 overs - was that entered into the equation?

Even the kiwi commentators (radio) mentioned it and how it seemed a bit harsh.

Why should it come into the equation? 238 runs is 238 runs, regardless if it was 10/238 in the 20th over or 0/238 in the 50th.

DL is about the chasing team and the resources they have to achieve the target.

We should be rewarded for bowling NZ out 6 overs short of their allocated overs.

Disgraceful.
But that's got nothing to do with limited overs cricket, and never has. The total is the only thing that matters, not how you got there or when.

If your team makes 238 in 50 overs for the loss of no wickets, and mine makes 238 in 20 overs for the loss of 10, the match is still a tie.

Yeah, righto, you win.

But Ponting's decision was still a disgrace.
