Didn't see the game, explain please :D

Re: Australia in New Zealand

They must have sort of ran into each other on the pitch (off camera), then got in each others faces with MJ bumping his face in his grill, then Haddin pulled them apart. Wasn't that bad just pretty funny.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Good way to set up a series that. A New Zealand win against the number 1 team and lots of competition.

It must be harder to beat New Zealand in New Zealand than India and India going on the last two results :)

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Australia need to bowl first against the Kiwis, easy to chase on those small grounds and the Kiwis love chasing and always have

Re: Australia in New Zealand

What Ponting himself said in the series just before the 07 World Cup when they got on a losing streak. Their batting was able to chase down anything, the bowling at the time was down.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

One other question which I know Boris answer :D but, is Hopes needed in this side? Is there any point having both Hopes and Watson in the top 7? It seems a waste having Hauritz in the side and only getting 3 overs a game

Answering this without any intended bias:

He is replacing Marsh. In his last four games he has made more runs than Marsh combined of his last 6 and he is opening. Marsh isn't in form.

Hopes bowled well to a plan last night to get his wicket. His bowling went to s*** after that apparently (only watched the highlights) but it's not as if the rest of the team was anything to marvel.

He is going fine in both forms. Watson should be used in small portions like he has been well (due to his nature and pending injury concerns) and that is how he gets his wickets).

Hopes is there as an option should all else fail. Not everyone has to bowl out their 10. Best to have one too many options than one not enough.

Both things there are true :D

To put it another way.

Has there ever been a noticeable point in Hopes being in the side?

He's Mr Fix It. He's there when you need him, not there when you don't.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Well the team lost so obviously the all out pace tactic didnt work and it never has, it allows the batsman to settle in and they loved the extra pace of the ball, but if Hopes was replacing Marsh he should be opening the batting and not bowling unless required, but they end up with too many bowlers and a game can be lost because a bowler gets ignored who could have done a better job

Rather than an argument of Hopes place and whether he does his job because we all know everyones points on that, i suppose I am questioning whether Australia needs an extra batsman rather than 2 all rounders and preferably one who opens the batting successfully in place of Haddin, maybe Tim Paine is the answer?

However it oftens seems with Australia if they have someone missing who they want back in the side despite any previous performances, they will simply use a player like Hopes to fill the gap rather than risk having a proper replacement in who could force the incumbent out for good

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Except you forget that Hopes has had at least 4 summers behind him where he has performed outstandingly.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

I know you love Hopes and want to squeeze him in anywhere you can, but looking throughout most series over recent years, the only time he has played and Shane Watson was bowling was the Champions Trophy when Watson came back from injury and was easing back into the bowling, most other series he is either at no8 or the other all rounder was Symonds who was more of a batsman

There is no need for 2 all rounders who both bowl 8-10 overs in your top 7 and the all out pace attack for Australia usually fails

You want him in then they should drop Hauritz if they wont bowl him anyway but the team has too many bowlers and they are all similar, if a bowler gets hit around they have Hussey and Clarke to fall back on, no need for a bowler like Hopes to be there in case someone gets hit because the captain just uses him and Watson anyway

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Well go down on a pace bowler then...

He will be in and out with the rest of them anyway. This series I think we will see everyone on tour play, maybe even a guy like Warner if he's still over there. The rotational basis seems to work.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Warner has come home, playing in the Futures League atm i think so there are only 2 players missing out, McKay and Voges

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Fair enough.

So you are saying you would prefer either Hopes opening the batting (which he could do) or Voges batting down the order?

Re: Australia in New Zealand

I would prefer they called up an opener like Paine or maybe give Voges a couple of games, may as well, they know what Hopes can do, it just seems a waste having 6 genuine bowlers or if Hopes plays, then he or Watson should be treated as a batsman

England often fall into the trap, play too many all rounders and in the end a usually reliable bowler gets overlooked

Just watching the replay atm and saw Harris do a shocking misfield off Hopes, later in the innings Hopes does an even funnier effort off Harris, funny to see the 2 state teammates giving away boundaries off each others bowling :D

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Some things never change, Eddie slanging off the queenslanders in the aus side - who would have thought.

Bitter man indeed - and why wouldn't he be - his beloved Vics just lost their 4th FRC final in a row while his AFL team, Collingwood, have lost countless AFL finals not to mention the 2 grand final losses to the Brisbane Lions.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Oh yeah, really bitter about QLD, the team Victoria have beaten 2 years in a row at the GABBA to earn themselves a big pay check at the Champions League or the team Victoria won the Shield against last year

But I can see why QLDers get over defensive about their 2 ODI representatives, its all they have left, they have no one in Australias T20 side and havent had a test player for over 12 months whilst Victoria has had 5, must be hard for the QLDers to accept
