I really think we shouldnt be selecting players like Clarke as captain if he isnt a top11 T20 player. We should be selecting the proven best T20 batsmen and bowlers from the state tournament, preferbly big-hitting ones :D

So here's the team I would most like to see represent Australia:

1: S Marsh [obvious choice, still in awe over his century against NSW]
2: D Warner [doubt anyone would disagree with playing him for T20 matches]
3: S Watson [best all-rounder in the country]
4: C White [arguably one of the best hitters in the world, captain of the side]
5: M Hussey [if Australia find themselves in a sticky situation, Hussey is ure to get them it out]
6: G Bailey [proven batsmen as Tassie's captain]
7: M Marsh [the future of australian cricket and i think the earlier he's given a go the better]
8: T Paine [To Have this guy at 8 in the batting order shows how good the batting credentials of this team is]
9: S Smith [excellent batsmen as well as being the future of australia's spin bowling]
10: P Siddle [takes wickets and is hard to score runs off]
11: S Tait [is perfectly suited to bowling 4 over matches]

12th: M Henriques
13th: A Voges

A very batter friendly side, but with All-rounders Watson, M Marsh (can bowl at 140+) and S Smith more than capable of bowling 4 overs, I didnt see the need for more genuine bowlers. The only thing I'd be tempted to change would be replacing Bailey with Henriques for more bowling strength.
I the T20 form of the game is the perfect way to introduce young players to the australian side, and give the older players a break.

Happy with that team, all for one thing. An actual T20 bowler in for Siddle, he hasn't proven himself below Tests, and there are plenty of much better bowlers in the T20 arena. Bowlers like Nannes, Harris (most economical bowler in Australia) and the like.

I think we've talked about this, but he isn't cap-tied after representing NED in the World T20?

Nah I'm pretty sure that only applies to Tests believe it or not.

No, he is now tied to Australia after they used him in the ODI against Scotland and then the rained off T20 against England last year

It seems a player can go from a non test playing nation to a test playing nation without any no play period, but cant go back unless they wait 4 years between games with the test playing nation

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Aaron Heal more than deserves a go at the highest level in the Twenty20 form of the game. Was the leading wicket-taker again in the Big Bash and had an economy rate of less than six runs per over.

Fairly impressive if you ask me.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

As tough as it is, Heals hopes for higher honours are hurt by his states poor use of him just like Rogers was. Players are ranked on a points system and really players need to be in all forms to get recognised, get a contract then get selected

Yes, you have a point there. Heal plays every Twenty20 game, most FRC games but not that many Shield matches although he did play the last one and bowled quite well.

I don't see much of a problem with contracting a player who plays very well at T20 and one-day domestic level if they have the performances to back themselves up. Bracken is a similar player, plays all of Australia's one-day fixtures (when fit) but doesn't get a look in for the test side yet he is a contracted player.

I would really like to see Heal given a shot since he has been the best T20 bowler in the Big Bash for the past two seasons and has an excellent one-day record also. It will be interesting to see who they pick for the T20's and the rest of the one-day matches with Hauritz struggling so far.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

I dont see a problem with it either, but thats the excuse they used when Rogers lost his contract, he didnt earn enough points

David Warner is probably about the only case I can think of atleast recently of players who only play in the limited overs formats when selected and contracted and maybe the increase in T20 may see them start picking more limited overs speciallists, they may even bring in new contracts to cover it

No, because NED aren't a test playing nation.

Australian T20 Side [Discuss]

Ok who should be in the Australian T20 side? We have made the misteak in the past by playing ODI players instead of T20 specialists.

My team:

1. D. Warner
2. S. Watson *
3. M. Clarke *
4. D. Hussey *
5. C. White
6. S. Smith *
7. B. Haddin
8. M. Johnson *
9. N. Hauritz *
10. R. Harris
11. D. Nannes

* = All-rounder

The Official Named Squad:
Australia squad Shane Watson, Shaun Marsh, David Warner, Michael Clarke (capt), Cameron White, Travis Birt, David Hussey, Steven Smith, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait.

Unlucky:
S. Marsh, B. Hodge, A. McDonald, A. Finch, P. Siddle, M. Hussey, D. Christian, T. Pain, J Hastings, A Heal.

Finch is very unlucky not to make the squad IMO.

Re: Australian T20 Side [Discuss]

Mike Hussey has one of the better records of the side and is an awesome finisher at any level, so I would be playing him. I would also be playing Marsh, simply because of that innings, plus also being the best T20 batsman for some time domestically at a consistent level.

Except he hasnt been the best batsman domestically at T20 cricket at any stage

With consistency he has, the best T20 players are hit and miss, take Warner for example, he churns out runs but gets them in groups of 50s and very quickly. Then the rest he gets out for nothing. Marsh puts out a lot of 30s and 40s and quickly, always boosting the score. Then he sometimes explodes.

I would have him in the team.

Re: Australian T20 Side [Discuss]

I would say Hodge and Hussey have been consistently better than him and are the 2 best T20 batsmen in Australia

Fair enough. There are better, but still those two do have the ups and downs that T20 brings.

Marsh is just a good combination with a Warner or Watson, keeps things steady but still strikes at 150.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Hodge eh
Is that really an investment for a growing game? how many years has he got left? 10 maximum compared to someone like marsh who has 20.
Sure hodge is the here and now choice but there is unfortunately no chance as he would have to replace the golden boy who only deserved his test spot for 2 matches and that should have been the end of his representative career.
Dan Christian has a spot in any other team in the world except aus.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

T20 World Cup to start in one month. Squads have been selected today, with some interesting inclusions/declusions.

Australian Squad:

David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (capt), Cameron White, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Tim Paine, Steven Smith, Daniel Christian, Brad Haddin (wk), Brett Lee, Dirk Nannes, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Shaun Tait.

Brett Lee back from injury, going to play some IPL and has one month to be back to full fitness. One would think he is in the First XI the way he has pushed out Harris and the couple of other contenders despite not playing since October last year.

Birt is out after playing 3 games, as is Harris as said.

Michael Hussey hasn't played since the last T20 World Cup, so interesting to see him there, but a good choice nonetheless IMO. Of the little he has played he has been one of the top batsmen, so in my First XI as well for the first fixtures at least.

That pace line up is frightening. The slowest there is Johnson, and that's saying something. Having Tait, Lee and Nannes would be heaven come for me. Would pay any amount of money to see Lee and Tait at full flight again together.

Thoughts on the squad?
