Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Just had a look at the umpires for the weekend. Is the BCA looking for umpires? Only one named for each game. Looks like some sqaure legging to be done. Opening bats don't go out early.

Pete Moore. GPCC what has changed your mind? How did Pete or Darley change their minds. Could GPCC be getting some new equipment soon? Its all very interesting.

Round one you can expect a few upsets. Some rusty cricketers!

I must add that Thommo and Cordo bowled as well as I've seen. Had us in all-sorts early and were tough to get away all day.

ah wrighty, it was a good knock by yourself. yes cordo bowled really well, but to say that thommo bowled as well as you had seen is pumping your own tyres a bit. thommo is carrying a leg injury & bowled well within himself all day for fear of aggravating it further.

well batted tho.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Mounties made 9/360 odd.

Goonan 38, Jeffrey 51, Fletcher 65, Severino 93 n.o.

Should be enough you'd think.

Probably a bit out of context there. I thought he bowled pretty well, jagged the ball around a bit and hit the right areas a lot. In partnership with Cordo at the other end, made life very difficult early on.

I did think early on that Thommo had dropped pace a bit (he wasn't as sharp as I'd remembered) - but the leg worry explains why that was so.

Combine's top order succumbs to speed
6/10/2008 1:45:00 AM
A BOWLING ambush has sent Ballarat-Redan reeling in its Ballarat Cricket Association club firsts season launch at White Flat.
The Combine's top order crumbled under a blistering Golden Point attack, and in less than three and a half hours its line-up had collapsed, all out for 97 on Saturday.

Pointies' opening bowler Matthew Swards was merciless in his approach, nailing 5-18.

At Wendouree, home-team batsman Gavin Webb carved up Coronet City bowlers, chalking up 180 runs before he was caught out in the final over.

Mt Clear and Darley have each set up a solid chase for Brown Hill and East Ballarat next week while North Ballarat will have a tough assignment containing Napoleons-Sebastopol at the crease after posting a target of 165.

Golden Point captain Steve O'Loughlin is praying for sunshine on Saturday so the Pointies can claim a short, sharp victory to start the season. They need just 16 runs for the win, resuming at 1-82.

``It was a strange day on Saturday, we didn't expect to be knocking Ballarat-Redan about like that,'' O'Loughlin said.

``We've done most of the hard work, now we just hope we can get there without rain stopping play.''

O'Loughlin said right-arm bowler Matthew Swards was ``making the ball talk'' when he tore through the Combine.

Swards claimed the scalps of Allister Edmends and Chris Egan, both dismissed for ducks, within four overs.

Pointies' rookie Ash Gunn captured his first A grade wicket in the next over, sending opening batsman Adam Lane back to the change rooms.

Swards continued his bowling assault, adding three more wickets and finishing with nine maidens from 17 overs.

Seventeen-year-old Gunn was impressive in his firsts debut with 15 runs against his name from an eight-over spell, before returning to mop up Combine tail-enders Mark Sculley and Aaron Johnson.

Sculley was top scorer with 28 runs.

O'Loughlin looked forward to seeing what damage the promising youngster could inflict on a turf wicket.

Melbourne recruit Matthew Collins was also solid in his debut deliveries, claiming 1-26.

Top order Pointies Andrew Faulkner and Josh White will resume at the crease on Saturday in strong form.

The pair were particularly brutal with short deliveries and are primed to add to a partnership of 52.

* REIGNING premier Mt Clear has launched a powerful start to the defence of its title posting 9-363 on day one of its clash with Brown Hill.

But the Mounties' new look bowling attack will be put to the test on Saturday when it is the Bulls' turn at the crease.

Mounties' Brett Severino dominated with the bat at number seven, finishing on 93 at stumps.

Captain Darren Fletcher and playing-coach Paul Jeffrey bolstered the Mounties' top-order efforts with an 87-run partnership.

Fletcher made 63 runs while Jeffrey scored 51.

The Mounties will turn to bowling recruits Simon Feros (Warrnambool) and Rhett Ovens (Western Australia) to finish the job when play resumes.

* AGGRESSIVE batting from middle-order batsman Gavin Webb saved Wendouree from potential disaster against Coronet City.

Wendouree was 5-138 when Webb stepped up to bat with his four predecessors sharing 10 runs and two ducks between them.

Webb added a mammoth 180 runs and formed a lethal 165-run partnership with Brad Gifford to help Wendouree finish 9-354 at stumps.

Webb's impressive total included six sixes and 17 boundaries before City fielder Alex McCarthy caught him out.

Opening batsman Sam Miller had Wendouree off to a steady start before he was bowled out on 67 while Gifford notched up a healthy 55 runs before he was run out.

Coronet City captain Brendan Burns spurred on his troops with a steady display of 3-46 and 10 maidens from 19 overs.

* A LOWER-order Darley revival has dished East Ballarat a challenging 374-run target next week.

Darley's Lachie Herring helped the Lions' top order to a steady start of 74 runs before making way for the middle-order to keep things ticking over.

Daniel Ryan stepped up to the crease at number eight and provided a welcome boost of 74, forming a handy 74-run partnership with tail-ender Brendan Parker, who managed 64 before he was caught out.

East youngster Peter Colbourne proved a reliable wicket-taker, claiming 3-69, while fellow firsts debutant Brad Hallam opened the bowling and took 2-59.

* ENTHUSIASM was not dampened when North Ballarat faced dominant campaigner Napoleons-Sebastopol.

North set a chase of 165 but was buoyed by the persistence of top-order batsman Scott Wright, who chalked up 95 runs not out.

The bulk of Wright's tally was from clever singles, with just one six and two boundaries, but with smart running he claimed seven threes.

Napoleons-Sebastopol opening bowlers Brendan Thompson (3-22) and Luke Corden (3-35) kept busy in economical spells.

Team-mate Jacob Branch cleaned up North's lower order with three handy wickets.

Napoleons-Sebastopol snuck in 10 runs from five late overs to start its hunt.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Well done on the cut and paste there Show. Poor effort from our boys, myself included. Combination of good bowling and poor batting. Don't get a big head Swardsy, you still dropped a sitter and missed the easiest of run-outs!! That's about the only positive I can take out of Saturday...... (says with tail between legs)

Dont worry waka the fill in captain for east won the toss and sent Darley in. The is known as a "Brendan Parker". (Parks always used to win the toss and bowl) 380 runs later i think he may rue the decision.

Great to see young daniel ryan score his first BCA half century. Some very entertaining cricket and adds some depth to lower order with parker & walker.

Webb must have been awesome with 180. not bad for the first game of the year.

Webb batted very well. Came in when they were 4 for 40 odd and just played the ones he had to until the last 10 overs when he went besurk hitting plenty of 4's and 6's. He didn't give a chance all day.full credit to him. Difference between a good team and a bad team is good teams always get themselves out of trouble.

Earlier Herring pleaded guilty to the abusive language charge in that he called Edwards a "cheat" after the Dahlsens Swans won by five points from an Ash Baker kick after the siren.

A remorseful Herring said it was a spur of the moment thing triggered by the heartbreaking nature of the loss.

If only they knew what he is like on the cricket field.........

10 goals 20 cost the devils buddy not ash baker. had two kicks for the day - both good goals.

That umpire is also a very good sledger but is one of those blokes that cant handle it back and uses his position to gain the edge.

Footy season is over anyway.
