Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

This is finally the match that will go a long way towards finalizing the two teams to advance. Sri Lanka and West Indies are both undefeated, and Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are both winless. If West Indies wins today, then both Sri Lanka and West Indies will clinch a spot in the next stage, regardless of what happens in the final matches.

However, if Bangladesh can pull off an upset, then there is a realistic chance of a 3-way tie if they can also beat Zimbabwe, and if West Indies were to bounce back and beat Sri Lanka in the final match. A 3-way tie would certainly be exciting, but of course, all signs point to a win for West Indies and clinching a spot for themselves and Sri Lanka in the next round. (But an upset today would sure make the final match between Sri Lanka and West Indies a thriller!)

I'm a fan of both Bangladesh and West Indies, and while I'd love to see Bangladesh do well, based on current form I think that the West Indies are playing like one of the top teams in the world right now. If they keep it up, Bangladesh won't have a chance.

Bangladesh 48-1 after 10.

Entertaining so far, with some nice bowling, and some fun shots from Bangladesh, especially from Aftab. He's scoring very quickly, and I'd be very surprised if he's still around after the 20th over. He's up to 31 from only 23 balls, with 2 Sixes already.

73/1 after 16.

Very nice partnership so far for Bangladesh. If they can be careful here and hang on to their wickets, they'll have the opportunity to set a good total.

Re: Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

Nafees finally out for 38,
Bangladesh 95/2 after 20 overs.

Aftab got his half century and he's up to 53 from only 43 balls.

Re: Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

Wow, Collymore bowls Saqibul and then gets Bashar lbw on the very next ball. This match has turned around quickly.

Bangladesh 96/4

Re: Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

Aftab finally out for 59.

Bangladesh 107/5 after 24. The loss of Aftab will be tough for them to bounce back from. There's a definite possibility that the West Indies will roll through the tail now.

Re: Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

And they sure did. Bangladesh were bowled out for 161 with Ahmed top scoring with 59, Nafees got 38 with Khaled Mashud not out at the end on 22.

Bravo bowled his full 10 overs and picked up 3/14 with Samuels, Collymore and Taylor all picking up two wickets each. Gayle got the other wicket.

So far, West Indies are toying with Bangladesh with Chanderpaul and Gayle both batting very slowly with both uncharacteristically blocking a lot of deliveries. Still, they haven't lost a wicket with West Indies 0/108 after 28 overs.

Gayle on 49, Chanderpaul on 43.

Re: Bangladesh v West Indies: Champions Trophy

After crawling along for a period there and blocking to help Gayle get his century, West Indies finally win with Gayle hitting a four to get the winning runs.

It was a very easy victory in the end and even though West Indies took their time, they were always in control and could of won earlier if they had wanted to.

Gayle finishes unbeaten on 104 with Chanderpaul anchoring the innings with his 52.

The Windies finish with 0/164, a massive 10-wicket victory.

Yet another inept performance from the Bangladeshis, a promising start but as has happpened all too often, their batting fell apart and as a result, were comprehensively thrashed.

West Indies and Sri Lanka are through to the group stage of the Champions Trophy. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe play on Friday to see who will win the wooden spoon.

Player of the Match was Chris Gayle.

It was the usual story for Bangladesh. There were a few good performances, but the rest of the team was worthless. Oh well.

I'll say this, though: Coming into this tournament, I thought Bang and Zim were unlucky to be paired with SL and WI, as both the Sri Lankans and the Windies should be viewed as possible winners of the tournament. Things may have gone a little differently if Bangladesh were given a chance to play England, Pakistan, or a New Zealand team that seems like it hasn't played in forever.

Decent bowling from a few of the Bangladeshis. While they didn't pick up any wickets, at least they prevented Gayle and Chanderpaul from scoring at a threatening rate. Great batting from Gayle though.

And I'm thrilled with Bravo's numbers. Sure, he came in and faced the tail, but he put up some superb stats today, and I hope he'll take a confident attitude into the rest of the tournament. He could play a major role for the West Indies.
