11 4.09 5.27 5.23 4.30 4.23

What does these numbers tell us?

1. Aus and Eng typically have very good openers.
2. Ind/Pak have poor openers - Gavaskar, Majid Khan were exceptions.
3. Aussie #3 has been the best performer in the team- mostly because of Bradman and Ponting? or is it always the case?
4. Ind/Pak/RSA have thier best bat at #4 - Tendulkar,Inzy,Miandad for examples

Re: Batting position and averages

wow that is a lot of numbers but ther eis no significant difference over such a big population

Re: Batting position and averages

Those are interesting numbers but I always hate generalizing too much in cricket. The game has way too many variables to be generalized so easily.

India batting averages by position

last 5 last 10 last 20 1986-96
1 30.64 29.75 31.70 35.20
2 42.11 37.43 36.29 34.23
3 51.53 50.91 46.14 37.63
4 45.30 49.35 47.42 43.93
5 34.24 36.21 37.92 40.97
6 37.60 34.81 32.98 29.67
7 22.76 21.09 24.21 29.82
8 18.29 15.17 18.03 23.23
9 14.12 13.63 14.43 15.91
10 9.99 8.42 9.52 11.51
11 6.87 5.22 4.50 3.24

The last 5 years:
Sehwag's influence on the opener's numbers shows(he usually
starts as the non-striker). 42 to 30.

#3 has been the best bat and is easily explained, Dravid has been THE performer in the
middle order.

#4 has been an abberation - typically Indian #4 is the best
bat in the team.

#5 has been the weakest link in the middle order.

#6 has outscored #5 for the first time - a very rare occurance.

With so much emphasis on wicket keepers who can bat, the team
has not had much runs from #7 in the last 5 years. poorest yield
by historical standards. That should change soon however with Dhoni in the team.
