Bowling Radar Off The Charts

I cant bowl this year.

Nothings going right. In the nets I am only bowling about 100ks (was about 110-115 last year) and am wide of off stump or pitching on middle and angling down leg.

I cant spot anything different in my action, or my run up. In fact, I think my run up and action are more settled than ever. Ive tried the usual - make sure my left arm is doing something, try and be strong at the crease, follow through, look where I want the ball to pitch etc.

I just get more frustrated and it gets worse. What can I do???

Without seeing you bowl, my first thoughts would be that it is something to do with your left arm (right arm bowler?).

You need to get someone who knows what they're looking for to watch you for a few overs to really pick up the problem (or post a video on here and we can have a look). It's really easy to think that nothing has changed as it 'feels' the same but the truth is that we can't analyse ourselves unless it's on video.

Make sure you're coming into the crease straight and really work on getting the non bowling arm pointing at the target. It may help to place a target on the ground to give something extra to aim at. If you have to, cut out the pace and simply walk through your action. Then build it up. Sometimes, we just need to go back to basics for a short while to remind ourselves of what should be happening.

Yeah I am a right arm bowler.

I always have a very good seam position and my wrist is always very straight (my captain always tells me) so I think it is my left arm or that I am falling away after I am bowling.

Its just really annoying as I was hoping this year I would consolidate myself in the A Grade team after playing A res and Bs for the past two years but am sitting in Bs batting and hardly even bowling!!

Re: Bowling Radar Off The Charts

Work on just the left arm for a bit then. Really focus on getting it pointing towards the target and then getting everything else come through straight.

Also, try to relax. You mention that you're getting frustrated and that is part of the problem. The more frustrated you get, the tenser you feel and it just worsens the problem gets. Treat practice as an opportunity to put things right for the time being, not a place where you are being judged/marked etc.

Just spend an hour in the nets, I find that when my bowling form drops for whatever reason, a good session in the nets always makes things better, especially if you can bowl to a batsmen

OK Resist... I wanted to eliminate a growth spurt. Before you start changing things, it is always best to try to analyse the past year and see if anything else has happened; such as an unrelated accident/injury which can affect your proprioception or whether you have gained/loss weight. Is there anything you can think of?

Re: Bowling Radar Off The Charts

Not really. I was very injury prone through cricket from when I was 16 through till when I was 18 (I played maybe only 20 games out of 40 in three years) due to back injuries from bowling, contusion of the bone on my arm and two broken fingers haha...

So this past 18 months I have not been injured at all, so I would have thought that being able to train/play more consistantly would be better.

I was rather unfit about 12 months ago, but nothing major. Just a few jogs around the block and I was ok.

Not necessarily! When you carried injuries, your body learned to compensate. Now that you are injury free, your body is working the way it should and your muscles need to re-learn correct movements. This is the same with a change in fitness.

Send the video when you can, we should be able to get you bowling faster and more accurately than last year now that the base is good but you may have to work a little harder than normal to get there :)

Re: Bowling Radar Off The Charts

Well the start of another season and still wayward in matches a bit. Only been able to play 2 out of 4 games and bowled 0/18 off 4 (we were only defending 70 haha) and then 2/20 off 6 (only defending 100!)...

Feeling better but still not happy :(
