Braced Front Leg

Hi,
Could you please tell me the technique on how to keep the front leg braced when bowling fast. Whenever I try the front leg braces for a moment then collapses. Could you please show me photos or videos on fast bowlers and other videos which show how to brace the front leg?

Thanks

It is clear that your knee cannot sustain the pressure because you can manage to make it straight and yet it subsequently collapses. It can be a good sign, because it means that you have a high intensity action. Squats might help your leg to be able to take weight better. However, a straight front leg is not a necessity for pace; as Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel both have bent front legs whereas Anderson, of the same pace, has the most braced front leg possible. David Lloyd noted that "99% of express fast bowlers have bent front legs" and although I am sure this is an exaggeration, it shows that you can bowl quick with a bent front leg.

Re: Braced Front Leg

Since you are adamant, the only possible method is a regiment of leg strengthening (though I cannot be more specific than that, simply through lack of knowledge) and practicing from a walk through pace upwards.

Re: Braced Front Leg

If you are really keen to brace the front leg, you need to strengthen the ligaments that support your knee. You could start by jumping on a trampoline and landing on your front leg [braced] and hold for as long as you can before moving forward. You need to keep repeating this move. The trampoline will absorb some of the shock as you strengthen this area.

The braced front leg will improve pace and bounce but at a cost and it is not something I would recommend unless you have a really good core. The shock does not disperse and will always find the weakest link; in an unconditioned person, this is usually the spine.

Re: Braced Front Leg

are you suggesting that if i carry on bowling with a braced leg i will get injured or hurt my back?

Re: Braced Front Leg

Absolutely not.. if that were the case, I would not suggest you try. Many people bowl with a braced leg without injury.

Im not sure what you meant by the spine bit. Could you please explain?

Re: Braced Front Leg

Braced leg means the knee doesn't take the weight of the delivery, so the weight goes through your body. This weight usually targets the spine of a person who has poor conditioning.
