Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

The second semi-final is upon us, the winner to play Australia in the Grand Final of this tournament. West Indies have been the real surprise and so far have impressed in the main part of the tournament, even beating tournament favoruites Australia earlier on. South Africa had a poor start against New Zealand but have picked up their game of late and have looked rather decent.

Brian Lara has publicly said that South Africa are favourites but West Indies come into the game with better form, losing a meaningless match against England and a collapse against Sri Lanka which could prove a worry. Pollock, Ntini and co will be looking to cause a callypso callapso while the West Indies batsmen are in pretty good form.

Whatever the outcome, we are set for a classic game. This will be a cracker!!

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

South Africa are 1/61 after 13.3 overs.

Graeme Smith fell early to Taylor for 19 which was made in quick time.

Currently Kallis is on 15 and Bosman 23. Interesting to note that Bosman does not have a 50-over match century of any description but he does have a Twenty20 hundred.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

Gayle and Chanderpaul are 94-0 after just 13 overs.

A fantastic start for the West Indies chase!

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

120-0 after 20

South Africa finished with 258-8, so they're about 10 runs away from the halfway point of the chase.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

Chanderpaul has been hurting for the past few overs, and he finally decides to call it quits for now. He walks off at 57 not out. Sarwan comes in.

West Indies 154-0 after 26 overs, they need 105 more.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

Gayle gets his century!

182-0 after 32 overs
77 more needed

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

Ntini gets Sarwan out for 27.

196-1 after 34

They need 63 from 16 overs, that less than 4 per over.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

The Windies couldn't lose from here, could they??

Morton is out for a duck and now they're 4/249 after 42.2 overs. Gayle is on 128, Samuels 0.

They're making a habit of this.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

And that's it! Windies win Gayle spanks Peterson to the boundary to bring up the winning runs.

West Indies get 4/262 in the end off 44 overs. Gayle not out on 133, Samuels on 5. They lost some careless wickets toward the end but they thrashed South Africa tonight, no doubt about it.

Gayle was masterful tonight, flayed the bowling attack around the ground and just played another great innings with total ease.

South Africa just had no answers and in the end it was a case of too little, too late.

Windies win by 6 wickets in the end and will face Australia in a mouth-watering final.

Chris Gayle was Man of the Match.

Easy win in the end, it's too bad Chanderpaul had to retire hurt, he may have actually made it to the end with an unbeaten opening partnership.

By the way, that 133 was the high score of the tournament!

So will we see Gayle vs Clarke again in the final? Or will everyone keep a cool head?

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

I hope Chanderpaul gets over his problems and is fully fit for the final.

Go on Windies, terrific performance!!!!! Windies is capable of beating Australia in the final. I thought the way West Indies fielded in the semi-final was phenomenal. There was a very long stretch during South African batting when no boundaries were scored at all. But it's not necessarily true that they weren't hitting the ball hard. Windies fielders were superb and were only giving away 1s or 2s. It was very encouraging to see a fully commited performance in almost all departments by a team like West Indies.

Also note that West Indies has the amazing honor of having played all teams except New Zealand and Pakistan in this tournament. Since they were forced to qualify, they've played against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India, Australia, England and South Africa. It would be quite an appropriate achievement for them if they were to beat Australia again, and retain the trophy they already won in 2002.

Re: Champions Trophy 2nd Semi Final - South Africa vs West Indies at Jaipur

well said Chandu

Heck I was so proud I registered to give my two cents.

SA played well, their target was a decent one and Gibbs did some good batting. Any side would feel comfortable with that kind of a total. But WI really showed some mettle. The only sour point was the frustrating mini collapse but they pulled through. The partnership between Gayle and Shiv was a beauty to watch. Gayle playing intelligently and hitting powerful shots as if he's a baseball player, and Shiv's skillful strokes - his six against Nel's delivery was jaw dropping. Like you I hope Shiv is fit enough for the final, both he and Gayle seem to be in synch in their partnerships.

I loved Lara's dig at the ICC when he thanked them for making the side have to play qualifying matches - in all seriousness I think it really did help them. Clive Lloyd's presence is proving to be inspirational for them, lets hope they can dig in deep pull out a win come Sunday.
