Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Both these teams come in relatively underdone. New Zealand haven't played since May and South Africa hasn't played a ODI since March.

New Zealand major strike weapon Shane Bond is injured and won't play. All-rounder Scott Styris has recovered from injury and is available.

Both teams have solid batting line-ups and we should be in for a cracker of a game.

New Zealand XIII: Hamish Marshall, Peter Fulton, Lou Vincent, *Stephen Fleming, Scott Styris, Nathan Astle, Jacob Oram, +Brendan McCullum, Jeetan Patel, Daniel Vettori, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Mark Gillespie (ODI debut) (2 to be omitted)

South Africa XIV: Loots Bosman, *Graeme Smith, Boeta Dippenaar, Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers, Justin Kemp, Andrew Hall, +Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Robin Peterson, Charl Langeveldt, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini (3 to be omitted)

Umpires: Mark Benson (England), Aleem Dar (Pakistan), Asad Rauf (Pakistan - 3rd), Rudi Koertzen (South Africa - 4th)

Sunny, 32 degrees and 50% humidity during the day.

Yeah but look where they are playing- (BS) = Bulls... stadium.. that track could be interesting.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

i thought NZ have not played since March, not May? i am thinking SA's bats will be wayyyy too strong for NZ, i expect them to win.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Accoring to this preview, NZ hasn't played since March.
Fleming confident despite Bond setback

Interesting comments about fixture congestion and long layoffs from Fleming. I've heard that he's a pretty sharp fellow.

This board needs more Kiwi fans.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

The game is underway. New Zealand got off to a quick start but the runs have dried up a little since.

Vincent was out in the 7th over to Pollock for 17.

Fleming and Astle are at the crease on 19 and 4 respectively. Fleming looks to be in good touch. New Zealand are 1/44 after 11 overs.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

New Zealand were dismissed for 195 on what looks to be a bowler-friendly pitch. Fleming looked really good and played a captain's knock while his partners fell around him.

He ended up scoring 89 in what proved to be a crucial knock. McCullum was the only other contributer with 21.

Kallis proved he is a genuine all-rounder, picking up 3/28, Petersen got 2/34 while Nel, Hall and Smith all picked up one wicket as did Pollock who also got a direct hit to end the New Zealand innings.

South Africa are off to a poor start, Kyle Mills looking very dangerous with the ball, he has 2/2 off 2 overs (imagine Richie Benaud saying that! :D). Dippeanaar and Gibbs both out for ducks. Smith is still there, he needs to stick around if South Africa are to win.

South Africa are 2/8 in reply, Smith on 3, Kallis on 5.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Mills now with a suprb catch to eliminate Kallis.

South Africa 25/3 after 8.1

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Boucher edges it back to McCullum

South Africa 50/4 after 15

Smith is still out there on 31. Obviously, if South Africa are to win, they'll need him to match Fleming's efforts from earlier.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Oram gets Smith to lob it straight to Vettori and he's finally gone for 42. That should be the huge one, and it would be very surprising if South Africa won from here.

5/69 after 21 overs.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Now Oram gets Pollock to fly out too. Kyle Mills took the first three, but Jacob Oram has come on and continued right where he left off, taking the next three.

At 71/6, a win looks highly unlikely for South Africa. Heck, they're going to have to work to reach 100.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

Patel with 2 great balls to bowl Nel and Ntini.

South Africa all out for 108. New Zealand win by 87 runs.
Mills, Oram, and Patel each took 3 wickets.

Considering that Pakistan seem to be in shambles at the moment, this looks like a huge win for New Zealand, and puts them in a strong position to make it to the semifinals. Even if they lose to Sri Lanka, and South Africa can beat Sri Lanka to have three teams tied at 2-1 (assuming they all beat Pakistan), New Zealand should still be in good shape if it comes down to run rate, thanks to their fairly large win in this match.

Great win for the Kiwis.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

It's all over folks!!! New Zealand won and congrats to them. I really thought South Africa would have put up a better fight though, i'm very disappointed.Final score: 108/10 in 34.1 overs. NZ win by 87 runs

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

I went to bed after NZ's innings and I have to say I'm surprised that SA lost by so much. But that was a real masterclass by Fleming.

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

How is it these matches are being played in India when the batsmen aren't scoring runs?

Re: Champions Trophy - New Zealand vs South Africa at Mumbai (BS)

The wickets are very slow and low. Remember the infamous Test in 2004 when Michael Clark took 6 for 9? Thats the sorts of wickets that are being served up.

Graeme Smith was turning the ball like a demon last night.
