Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

South Africa cannot afford to lose this game otherwise it could see them exit the tournament. They've played once and were convincingly beaten by New Zealand on a pretty dodgy pitch. Sri Lanka have one win and one loss and could sew up a finals berth by winning this game. They were disappointing against an undermanned Pakistan but had a good win against New Zealand.

This game should a good, hard fought game. Expect to see a cracker.

current standings:

Code:
Group B
              P W L NR T Points NRR For Against
Sri Lanka 2 1 1 - - 2 +0.594 419 / 86 420 / 98.1
New Zealand 2 1 1 - - 2 +0.414 360 / 100 274 / 86
Pakistan 1 1 - - - 2 +0.234 255 / 48.1 253 / 50
South Africa 1 - 1 - - 0 -1.740 108 / 50 195 / 50
If South Africa loses, they'll be the first of the final 8 teams eliminated from the tournament. If Sri Lanka loses, they'll still be alive, but they'll need Pakistan to sweep their last 2 matches, and then hope for favorable run rate.

This should be a good match, with the two teams a lot of people expected to challenge for the title both fighting to keep their hopes alive.

South Africa 34-3 after 11.

A great start for Sri Lanka. Let's see if they're able to finish tjem off quick.

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

the middle order really has come through for SA and saved them there here with some runs.
the openers had a combined 29 only:
Smith 10
Dipnaar 3
Gibbs 16

Boucher just got out so the middle order provided 126 runs (71% of the runs):
Kallis 43
DeVilliers 54
Boucher 29

currently 7/176 45.4 overs

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

is it me or Malinga is bowling basically side-arm? is that allowed?

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

219-9 SA finish. strong end for SA as i think 219 should be enough runs to beat Sri Lanka.

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

Vaas was superb, as he bowled 10 straight overs to open, picking up 2 wickets for only 16 runs. Malinga got 4 wickets, but 2 of them were in the final over.

220 is a decent target for this tournament. This has the potential to be an entertaining chase here.

Yes, it's perfectly legal.

South Africa come out really quite well and SL are 2 for 21 after 9.1 overs as Ntinin strikes.

I'm just sick of watching Sri Lanka- feels like every second game is Sri Lanka vs someone.

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

Sangakkara gone for a duck.
Sri Lanka 23-3 after 11 overs and in big trouble.

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

Nel bowls Atapattu, what a fantastic ball that was! Atapattu missed it by a mile.

Sri Lanka 34-4

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

partnership finally broken, Jayawardene run out thanks to some top notch fielding from Gibbs

Sri Lanka 82-5 after 25 overs, and they're running out of batters here

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

94-6 after 30, they need to score 6.3 per over, and the required rate will really start to climb with each over now

Re: Champions Trophy - South Africa vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

127-8 after 36

It's just a mere formality now, South Africa are cruising towards a win.

This will leave each team with 2 points in Group B, and it basically makes the final 2 matches in the group (Pakistan/New Zealand and Pakistan/South Africa) quarterfinals, with the winner of each match advancing to the semifinals. Sri Lanka's only hope will be for Pakistan to win both and have the final spot come down to NRR.
