Changing action

hi everyone,
i recently started training with a new coach and he changed my action a lot.
In the beginning, I use to have a shoaib akhtar like action, and my follow through was not straight. My arm was also not straight. I use to get outswing, a lot of pace and somewhat okay control. However I got injured a lot (twisting back etc.)

Here's what the new coach has done, he has tried align all my momentum in one direction:

1. A straighter arm during delivery and straighter head.
2. Made me follow through straight. Make sure my arms continue and carry on after delivery too.
3. Ask me to lean back before delivery.
4. Try and release at highest point.
5. Keep wrist facing straight in order to get LATE swing.
6. Asked me to try and make my action side-on (more swing), and if I can't, continue front-on.
7. Put my non-bowling arm (I am right arm fast) on the right side of my head as opposed to left.
8. Land on my toes.
9. In my delivery stride, make sure both legs are in line with the each other (not legs - toes).

I have got lots more control and it takes very little effort, however, i am bowling slower now. Sometimes the ball bounces quite a LOT and suddenly when I get it all right. The coach says pace will come with time.

Anything wrong with what he says??

Re: Changing action

Are you an open or side on bowler? I take it you're a side on by what the coach did. That should stop a few injuries.

Nothing wrong with what he said, but one thing that I have found with changing the action is that bowlers always revert to their original action when the going gets tough. You need to assure yourself that what he is saying is right and that it will help if you stick to it.

Re: Changing action

In addition to what manee has said, you need to make sure that you really work at the new action and make sure that it's programmed into your 'CNS' or else you'll find yourself slipping into old habits.

As your coach says pace will pick up with time, the key thing is make sure you have a good economical action with the minimum potential for injury.

Re: Changing action

The only thing that amazes me is that your last coach did not do this.

Number 7 only applies if you manage to continue with the side on action.

Good luck with getting into the groove but do persevere.

Re: Changing action

The main thing should be that do u feel confortable when bowling also if u want to bowl fast as you did before you should slowly start adding in things like driving the hips or may be slightly different follow through. You know small things like this, dont change all your action because you will get all over the place. Hopefully by doing these small things should make you fast again with your current action

Re: Changing action

I use to be a side on bowler with my initial action. However, then my right foot was not just parallel with the crease it was even more extended, and my left was way beyond perpendicular to it.
I read some tip from Dennis Lillee (in Brett Lee interview), that the base should not be changed. I think my natural base is front on. Will this affect my swing?

Re: Changing action

Also, isn't kinda hard to land on the toes.

And now when I watch games on TV, i see that most of the international bowlers don't have a perfect action. So how great would it be if one were to follow all the rules of fast bowling?

Re: Changing action

If you are a front on bowler, you're non-bowling hand has to be on the left-hand side of your head, so you're looking between your 2 shoulders, rather than over your left shoulder for a side on.
