Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

The Channel 9 commentary team are so biased towards australia and im sick of it.

Whenever another team gets away with a wicket that should have been given out they dont stop talking about how bad the decision was. If it is Australia that it happens to they say well thats just cricket you win some you lose some.

Im a huge fan of Australia but im sick of the arrogance of the test team and blatant bias of the commentary team.

I cant stand it

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

It's great how they are biased isn't?

It's kind of like how the Sub continent controls the ICC, get to pick new umpires when they have a cry, get to hold the World Cup out of turn over greater cricketing nations in Australia and New Zealand and have the laws changed so a bowler that chucks can play simply because of where he is from.

Mate, all I can say is thank god you brought this up cos you are 100% correct. The chanel 9 commentary is full of MORONS and ex-players who cant put 2 words together to save themselves, they are an absolute disgrace as representatives of australian cricket. If you want lively, astute and witty comments on the game and life at large then ABC is the one and only. Seriously, if you think the commentary is good you are an idiot.

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

I don't really notice it that much, except for Bill Lawry who is definitely, absolutely bias towards Australia and to Victoria as well and Ian Healy to Queensland. But on the other hand you have Tony Greig, who is definitely on the Indian bandwagon and for that matter on most of the visitor's side, especially South Africa and England (understandably). It would have been nice if 9 got a guest commentator from Sri Lanka and India, they always invite Ian Smith from New Zealand and Michael Holding from the West Indies, it's a good idea to have someone on the other side of the wagon to add a bit of spice to the commentary box and lessen absolute bias and have someone who wants the other team to win (apparently 9 are trying to get Sanath Jayasuriya into the box for the upcoming tri-series). Anyway, it was noticeable that it was Tony who came into the commentary box and not Bill when Australia lost their 9th wicket in the 2nd innings and India had the match all but sown up. I've also noticed that Michael Slater has been calling the action at the end of play (isn't he cutting into Bill's lunch here, isn't this his role?)

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

I don't mind the nine commentary team, they do a decent job.

The bias is always going to be there, the majority of them go for and have played for Australia so they are always going to want them to win. It's no different to the AFL telecast where the former players and the commentators have their sides that they go for.

Bill has always been biased. He loves Victoria and loves Australia and he will always call the game that way. Some of his calls though can be quite humourous but the bias is always there and usually quite easy to pick up. The callers I don't like are Tony Greig and Ian Healy. Grieg is just a moron and Healy dribbles rubbish most of the time. Slater is quality I reckon, he talks about himself a bit too much but he is very knowledgeable about the game as is Ian Chappell who is probably the most knowledgeable out of the entire team. Mark Taylor is also a decent commentator and Mark Nicholas and Richie Benaud are there to host and to make sure everything runs according to plan.

They do need to get more opposition side commentators into the box. Michael Holding is good quality but only comes out if West Indies are playing and Ian Smith is much the same, only here when we play New Zealand. I wouldn't mind seeing 9 recruit Harsha Bhogle, he has to be one of the best callers I've heard, a genuinely brilliant caller and I enjoyed his work when Australia were last touring India.

Kerry O'Keeffe is another that needs to be on there, even though he is an Aussie, he is damn hilarious and is very good value.

Just my take on the topic.

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

Tubby was good early on but in recent years he grates me by talking too much crap. Healy is complete and utter knob. I really respect Chappell but he spends to much time going on about how bad an opposition Captain's field settings are or how a batsman has a bad mindset or something, yes I really agree with you but there is no need to bring it up every 5 minutes for the next 2 hours.

Mark Nicholas does a good job to balance things out, a lot of people complain that he doesn't have an opinion an sucks up but I see it as he shows respect as he only played first class and doesn't have an ego. Has to be the one to replace Ritchie as the face of the team when he retires.

Bill loves Australia but at least he doesnt try to hide it which I think is better. Even though he is biased towards Australia at least he has great respect for all Cricketers and gives credit where due to the opposition, by far my favourite commentator, the bloke is a legend.

Slats has plenty of character and could be one of the best, possibly the new Bill, just needs to pull back on talking about his career too much. Overall I really like the commentary, I don't really give a stuff what Indians think.

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

Commentating cricket is a pretty thankless task... everything moves so slowly that the amount of padding is ridiculous. Most of the commentators talk their fair share of rubbish but as noted some are a lot worse than others. I tend to watch on mute with the ABC commentary on the radio... the timing is about half a second or so out, but it doesnt matter.

The jingoism of a lot of commentators does fairly make me cringe though. Kerry O'Keeffe can be atrocious at times, as great and funny as he is. Some of the uncharitable stuff they come up with about the opposition at times makes me fairly embarrassed that they're representing our country.

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

The problem is that the guys usually pick the old farts that have just retired and don't pick any of the really good commentators.
Bill Lawry and Tony Grieg fight like they are siblings.

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

Don't you dare knock Bill  He is a legend :D

Who do you suggest then?

Personally, as others have said, it would be nice to get a guest opposition commentator every summer.

Bill and Tony have been fighting pretty much since Tony joined channel 9 some 30 years ago, because Bill's very much obviously on the Aussie bandwagon while Tony is usually on the other side as I've mentioned. Alot of people say that these 2 don't like each other, much like the old days on the AFL footy show when Sam and Jason Dunstall were on it. My personal opinion is there are too many commentators in the box, listening to 3 of them (1 calling the action, the other 2 analyzing what's happening), 1 can go quiet for a long time (although that may please people who don't like certain commentators). They all get their turn to call the action except for Chappell and Richie. I like Chappell the analyzer, he does have alot of knowledge of the game and is usually spot on, but like someone suggested doesn't need to repeat himself so often. But there's no excitement when he calls the action. Richie's a legend and despite his age, is a very good caller of the game, it would be nice to see him get a turn in that role. @|

They don't fight that much. People just have that perception from the 12th man records. As Birmingham says when the producer tells him to make sure he includes the Bill-Tony aggro thing.

"F*** mate, I invented it" :D

Re: Channel 9 Commentry team disapreaciation thread

get rid of Bill Lawry and Tony Grieg

apart from that i'm alright.

they could have picked up Ranjit Fernando from South Africa, and they should have Ravi Shastri from India - he'd be commentating on ESPN Asia i think - but he's a fantastic commentator

Get over yourself. Seriously if you watch the cricket you can always switch the radio on and turn the volume down on the tv so that the radio drowns out the channel 9 team's voices.

Does it match up with the game play though? The footy doesn't match anymore . .

I've been sitting on the fence here but I must say, of course they're going to be bias, the majority of them are Australian commentators commentating mostly Australia vs. who. However, they really are not that bad, if you listen to other series around the world you'll probably hear them being bias too. If you ask me most of them are quite professional in trying to be as fair and neutral as possible.
In repeating myself again, the only adjustments they need to make are to go back to 2 commentators at a time instead of 3, because there are only 8 of them (Richie hasn't been in during the 20/20 and 50-over series so you can say 7), becuase with 3 of them in sometimes you either hear them talk over each other, or 1 of them can just go silent for long periods at a time. The other thing, more importantly, is get someone from the opposition country in, becuase usually they have far more knowledge than the Australians because they see alot more of them and it just balances things out a bit that you have someone going for the other side. Almost every other country does it.
