Charles Coventry equals ODI highest individual score

Zimbabwe batsman Charles Coventry has equalled Saeed Anwar's long-standing record individual score of 194 not out after smashing Bangladesh's attack to all parts of Bulwayo today.

The fact he was not out sees him go ahead on the list ahead of Anwar as Anwar was dismissed but I think they will be equal holders of the record.

Quite an amazing innings despite being against Bangladesh. I believe the record will be broken eventually, Coventry was a chance with two overs left but didn't get enough of the strike in the dying overs.

A fairly remarkable effort.

A brilliant effort really. A touch unlucky not to get the double. Good on him, hopefully its a sign of better things to come for Zimbabwean cricket.

A great innings and the Series has been a better match up than expected. He looked a tad nervous when the started but wow what a display of hitting at he end.

I hope this indicates that they are almost ready to turn the corner .. Zimbabwe that is..

great innings. i think its fair enough being against bangladesh, both countries seem on a level playing field performance wise.

anwar though, would have to be higher in my books.

and im sure matthew hayden could beat it if you gave him enough partners :D

Charles who? It's about time that the statistics for second and third tier teams such as Zimbabwe and Bangladesh were stripped away from the proper international cricket statistcs, for ALL forms of the game.

Let's get serious.

well i rate bangladesh vs zimbabwe like australia vs pakistan or similar. coventry wouldnt have a hope of scoring 194* against australia, but its level playing fields with bangladesh.

i think its fair enough, its the records where teams and players in countries like australia and south africa that get their records against minnows and expect them to be included when it doesnt really mean a thing.

Re: Charles Coventry equals ODI highest individual score

I just think that the ICC should be stricter regarding the countries that have their matches accorded elite-level status.

Let's have two tiers of competition, tier A and tier B and measure statistics accordingly.

That's not too radical and encourages countries such as Bangladesh and Zimbabwe to work hard to move up to level A status.

i suppose that is fair enough.

as long as tier A and B can still compete against each other, but records wont be included.

Re: Charles Conventry equals ODI highest individual score

I don't think segregating certain teams from being including in statistics is going to achieve anything. Stats don't play any meaningful role in cricket apart from something to look at, and it's not harming the game if 'Score X' is seemingly a bigger achievement than 'Score X + 1'.

Australia have the international soccer score record with 31-0 against Samoa, but nobody is suggesting it be stricken from the records, even though it was a complete farce.

Re: Charles Coventry equals ODI highest individual score

I remember the time when Zimbabwe were actually a competitive cricketing nation...its sad that it has taken this long before some good has come for Zimbabwe cricket. lets see whether or not they will become a force in international cricket.

Re: Charles Coventry equals ODI highest individual score

The stats are already stuffed from when they introduced the minnows into the World Cup. Glenn McGrath took 7 for 15 FFS.
