Connecting 2 computers

Hopefully someone can help me with this? I've got a new computer and my old one is sitting on the floor with loads or files on it that I want to put on the new one (music files). I'd also just like to be able to connect the other computer so that I can use the hard - drive space on it.

Can this be done by using the USB sockets in some way? Looking at the back of the old computer it doesn't have a socket that an RJ45 cable can fit into, so does this mean I'd have to buy a network card or something to enable the computers to connect using an RJ45 cable, or will USB cables be okay?

What do I need to do - I'm a layman so if you start talking Jargon I'm going to get lost.

Re: Connecting 2 computers

Yeah it can be done with a USB cable too. You'll need a bridged USB-USB cable to do so. Using the wrong cable can damage your PC or at the very least your USB port.

If you have no purpose of the other PC other than using its hard drive then it would be better to plug that hard drive in your new PC. That would make it easier to transfer data as well as increase your storage space.

Re: Connecting 2 computers

I'd agree with AB in that if you have no use for the other PC then the easiest thing is to put that hard drive into the new machine (assuming that they are both desktops and not laptops).

Re: Connecting 2 computers

Is that possible - can I have both the hard drives in the new computer?

1.Do they appear simultaneously in the list of drives when you open my computer?
2.Would the programmes/software etc that are on the old hard drive cause any conflict/problems with the new machine?
3. Is it as easy as plugging the hard drive in and then a wizard thing configures it?

Re: Connecting 2 computers

Yes it is possible to have both of them on the same PC and all the drives will appear simultaneously in My Computer. The software installed on the older hard drive wont run on the new PC. If you want to use them, you'll need to reinstall them.
Though its not as easy as plugging a USB cable in. You'll need to open the case for installing it. If you don't have experience in doing it then I'd suggest to getting it done by someone else.

Re: Connecting 2 computers

That sounds interesting and feasible, I'll have to explore that as an option. Looking at the old computer I notice that the wide band (cable) with about 37 socket/holes in it comes out of the mother board and seems to split. One end is loose and the other end plugs into the hard drive. Is the loose split end the bit where I'd plug the extra hard-drive into?
