Front foot ankle pain!!!

Hi Everyone,

I am having problems with my left ankle/foot (front foot for bowling as I am a right hander). When I run in to bowl, upon landing on my front foot I get pain in what I believe is my achilles tendon and I have to limp back to my mark and run in and bowl again. The pain is located just above the heal and slightly to the left. I was wondering how I would go about healing this?

Regards,
Danny

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Hi Danny,

Just a few questions:

How long have you been suffering with this problem?

Do you recall how it first started?

When you bowl again, does it hurt as much as the first time?

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Hi Liz,

Good to hear from you again :)

I've had it for about 4 - 5 weeks I think.

I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. I think I just ran in to bowl and it started hurting. I remember it was more gradual than sudden.

It probably hurts more now than the first time but for the past 2 or 3 weeks its been the same pain. It feels like as soon as I put that front foot force from bowling it goes numb and makes me limp but I can still run in and bowl. Just hurts when I jar it to the ground.

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Danny! Why Arsenal? Why?

It sounds like acute inflammation of the Achilles tendon.

Is there/was there swelling in this area?

Is there/was there redness of the skin?

Is there stiffness or any pain when you get up in the morning?

Sorry, there are always more questions than answers :)

Sit on the floor with your legs out in front. Make sure the feet are parallel and the toes are facing up so that you have good alignment and dorsiflex your ankles; bringing your toes towards your head. How does this feel in your left compared with your right ankle?

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Just to budge in, but its generally the same thing i want to ask Liz!

When i was seven i was playing baseball and got tripped on a base as i was running past, landed on a brick, and broke my ankle aswell as shattering the bone slightly.

Due to me being on crutches for 10 weeks my left ankle is now as bad but my right is messed up. The niggling pain is always there, i've been to a specialist about it and he advised running up steep hills to get the muscles stronger, but after a hill they're too sore to carry on, is there any specific thing i can wear to keep my ankle nice and tight. I have a "tubey grip," which doesnt work too well, is there anything i can do?

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Haha I love Arsenal :) Well Liz I'm from Australia so I chose the team with the best name and followed them ever since :) plain and simple. Please don't tell me you're a Man Utd fan. I'll be terribly disappointed :)

I don't think there was swelling and just looking at it now if there is it's very very minimal to the point where I can't tell for certain if there is a difference between my left and right.

I didn't notice any redness and there is none now.

When sitting on the floor I can feel a-lot more tension in my left calf muscle. It feels like the muscle is really tight and I feel a slight twinge/stretch just below my knee, so at the top of my calf muscle. I also start to feel it in my hamstring. My left leg feels much tighter than my right.

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

No Danny... football, soccer as we are multicultural, [huh! just upset all the British members!] is a bit pedestrian for me; I try my best not to follow it but if you were looking for the best name, surely that would be Tottenham Hotspurs

It sounds like you need to improve the flexibility in your gastrocnemius; that's the big, higher, bipennate calf muscle. Unlike the soleus, it originates at the femur, so above the knee.

Calf raises would be a good way to do this but start gently until the pain subsides. Do the sitting on the floor exercise, holding the stretch for 10s, progressing to 20s then to 30s but stop if there is pain rather than discomfort. Try to sit upright whilst doing this; resist the urge to lean back.

Let me know when this becomes easy and I shall give you more challenging exercises.

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Simbazz,

Oh dear! I hate to say this but running up hills, steep or not, aggravates the problem

Do you remember which bone you broke and which was shattered?

Re: Front foot ankle pain!!!

Cheers Liz. Well my favorite sport is cricket of course but I don't mind a bit of soccer/football. Ill start doing those exercises and see how it begins to pull up and let you know.

Again thanks for your words of wisdom.

Always a pleasure :)

Regards,
Danny
