I need help with my flies!

Look I know you blokes out in the tropics are going to be laughing at this with stories of snakes, dirty great spiders and the Aussies out there no doubt are gonna throw in Alligators and Black Widow stories? But has anyone here in old blighty noticed a change in the flies? It may be a Southern England thing - who knows? Anyway normally we're pestered with Gnats/Mosquitoes but last summer and already this year I've noticed a vicious little black fly that's about 1/4 of the size of your bog standard housefly and they're out there on fields - Cricket fields! They're not like Mozzies which are skinny and delicate who try and bite you without being seen and seem to have some trouble landing on you when you're moving. No - these little bleeders have a go at you when you're doing stuff so you're not aware that they're on you! They're a bit slow off the mark when you do spot them and are easily squashed, but if they've bitten you - christ don't you know it. The next day you get a small irritating spot and then it stays there for about 7-14 days and bloody hell does it itch and you end up scratching all around the spot and end up with big clusters of scabs if you really go at it in your sleep. I saw a bloke once in hospital who'd scratched himself and made it go sceptic and the nurse said "We've seen a lot of this recently". So what are these flies - does anyone know? Has anyone else noticed them? Could it be another indication of Global warming?

What a relief... I thought you had got stuck in your whites. :embarrassed:

The flora and fauna are definitely changing, especially in the south of the country. Malaria will be here within only a few years... if that.

I think these particular flies like the fertiliser they use on cricket grounds.

Citronella; spray it on your clothes or rub it into your skin. :D

Yeah I've heard of that stuff. If I get bitten like I did last year by these little bleeders I may have to resort to something like that.
