ICC allows batting team to choose one powerplay

The ICC has made another rule change to the ODI game with the batting team now allowed to choose when to take either the second or third powerplays. The Chief Executives Committee met in June and unanimously approved certain rule changes, another to be introduced will be the allowance of a third fielder outside the 30 yard circle during the second and third powerplays.

Introduced

  • Batting side to choose when to take second or third powerplay
  • Third fielder allowed outside 30-yard circle during powerplays two and three
  • Substitute fielders only permitted due to injury, illness or other wholly acceptable reasons
  • Umpires can now consult the third umpire to determine whether a catch has been taken or not

Retained

  • Free hit rule - Free hit to be taken immediately after a front-foot no-ball is bowled
  • Compulsory ball change after 35 overs
  • Interval rule - Umpires may shorten the interval between innings when time has been lost

ICC lets batting team choose when to one powerplay

Not bad I suppose. Games will probably be a little more high scoring now as I reckon a lot of teams will want to take their powerplays towards the end of an innings to maximise the amount of runs scored. The sub fielder rule is also a good one, the others are pretty much stock standard.

I like this, will see more variety when the powerplay overs are taken instead of it just being 0-20 overs.

Yeah good idea with the Powerplay, should be interesting to see how it goes.

Agreed. Its been in place in the Ford Ranger Cup over here, and it works quite well. As you said DK, stop the 0-20 over powerplays which happen 9 times out of 10.

As for the rest of them, it seems to be a bit of a much of muchness to me. Nothing particularly revolutionary in them, just a few more guidelines. Should be interesting to see how the captains work to use the batting powerplay to their advantage

Re: ICC allows batting team to choose one powerplay

The bowling captain's are always keen to get the powerplay out of their way rather than utilize them creatively. This should be interesting.
However, this is going to tilt the scales in favour of batsmen even more.
