India in Sri Lanka

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Harbhajan strikes again, this time it's Sangakkara who goes for 68.

Sri Lanka now 3/150, trailing by 179.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

At stumps on Day 2 Sri Lanka are 5/215. That means they are 114 runs behind with 5 wickets in hand.

Mahela Jayawardene is the key if Sri Lanka are to gain a first innings lead.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka fell apart on Day 3, their bottom order failed to add anything of significance, only Prasanna Jayawardene made double figures with a hard fought 24 from 67 balls.

The Lankans were all out for 292, trailing by 37 on first innings. Mahela Jayawardene top scored with 86, Sangakkara made 68 and Warnapura 66.

Harbhajan was impressive with the ball, 6/102 was his return. Anil Kumble made a mess of the tail, 3/81 were his final figures.

India's top order has made runs batting a second time. They are 4/200 at stumps, a lead of 237 overall. Sehwag was out in the 20th over for 50 from 52 balls, continuing his good form with the bat, Gambhir hit 74, Dravid 44 and Tendulkar got a start with an innings of 31.

Dravid was out controversially in the second last over before stumps, I'll let the cricinfo commentary explain;

cricinfo commentary said:
55.6 Muralitharan to Dravid, OUT, Review for the lbw. the off break around the off stump, Dravid goes for the sweep shot, misses and is struck on the pad on the off stump line. Mahela has a chat with the umpire and asks for the review. He was struck on the pad, just inside the line - more than half of the ball was inside the mat. He had taken a big positive stride down the pitch when the ball made contact on his pad but the ball was turning in to the stumps.. Decision still pending. What is going to be? Verdict is OUT. Dravid is not too happy as he storms off. He banged the bat on the ground as he walked off.

Rewind. The flighted off break landed just outside the off stump and turned in. Dravid had stretched his leg out and was hit on the off stump line. The ball was turning in and virtual eye suggests it would have hit the middle stump.

Some of you have wondered why Dravid was given out when it pitched outside off stump. You can be given out when it pitches outside off stump. Only if he was struck outside the off stump when he was playing a shot he can not be given out. Here Dravid was playing the shot but he was struck on the line of off stump - about 60% of the ball was inside the mat at the point of impact. The ball might have pitched outside off but the key is the point of impact. So he can be given out and as virtual eye showed, it was hitting the middle stump.

R Dravid lbw b Muralitharan 44 (133m 92b 6x4 0x6) SR: 47.82

So there you go, the video replay causing controversry but in the end doing it's job. Vaas is the leading Sri Lankan bowler with two wickets, Menid and Murali have one each, India are playing them better this time around.

The last two days should be good, India have the upper hand here but Mendis and Murali hold the cards for Sri Lanka. Ganguly and Laxman are at the crase but are both on zero so if the two Sri Lankan spin-twins can get them early, it'll be game on.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

India were bowled out for 269 in their second innings, losing their last six wickets for 69 runs. Muralitharan and Mendis cleaned up the tail with Dilshan and Prasanna Jayawardene combining for the run out for Ishant Sharma.

That set Sri Lanka a target of 307 runs which proved to be more than enough. Sri Lanka were bundled out for only 136, falling well short of the target score. They didn't start well, Wanrpura was out for duck in the second over, Sangakkara followed in the next over for one and then Mahela Jayawardene fell for five in the over after that one. Suddenly, Sri Lanka were 3/10 and in serious trouble. They never recovered from there, only Thilan Samaraweera provided any resistance, scoring 67 not out. Tillekeratne Dilshan was one of three players to score double figures with 38, the other being Michael Vandort is made exactly 10. Dilshan and Samaraweera combined for a partnership of 76 but Dilshan was then dismissed and the tail followed him without much fuss.

Harbhajan Singh did the damage with the ball, taking 4/51 from 14 overs. Sharma took 3/20 with Kumble picking up two wickets and Zaheer Khan snaring one.

So, a complete reverse of fortunes from the first game. Sri Lanka easily won the first match but India have run away with this second, to the tune of 170 runs. A very good all-round effort from the Indians, a much better performance was had by them in this test.

Unsuprisingly, Virender Sehwag was Man of the Match. The third test starts on Friday, August 8th at Colombo.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

This Mendis.

Heard he is going to be a very, very good bowler.

Better than Warne.

Thoughts?

Hard to say just how good he will be as he's only played two tests and a handful of one-dayers. However, in those games he has been very, very good and has really impressed, even outdoing Murali in some of the games he has played. He's doing his "apprenticeship" now with Muralitharan still playing but once Murali goes he'll be Sri Lanka's number one spinner if he keep going like this. Well in front of Chamara Silva now.

Mendis has a very good mix of deliveries, has the full array, off-breaks, leg-breaks, top spinners and can get seam movement also. Classified as a slow-medium bowler because of his unpredictability.

Looking very good at this stage.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Blistering start from India but that was undone by debutant Dammika Prasad who removed Sehwag for 21 to end the opening partnership on 51. In fact, Prasad took the first three wickets on the game. His next two were Dravid and Tendulkar, not bad for a first gamer!! Once again, Ajantha Mendis took over and ran through India's middle order, taking 5/56 for the innings from 28 overs. Muralitharan took the other two wickets as India were all out for 249. Gambhir top scored with 72, Ganguly made 35 and Zaheer Khan made 32 batting at eleven, he and Ishant Sharma added 51 for the final wicket, giving India's total some respectability.

Sri Lanka batted eight overs to finish the day. They made it to 1/14 at stumps, Warnpura fell to Sharma about ten minutes from the close of play.

Good game so far, Sri Lanka in control but if India can get a few early wickets they will be right back in this.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Slow going for Sri Lanka on Day 2 but they have the lead, albeit by two runs. Kumar Sangakkara was the mainstay of Sri Lanka's innings, scoring a patient 107 not out as his partners seemed to come and go. Chaminda Vaas made a handy 47 batting at number three, coming in as nightwatchman at the end of the day one. Vaas actually has second top score, the next best was Samaraweera with 35. But, the day belonged to Sangakkara, he is the main reason why they're in front and they'll need more runs tomorrow. A lead of about 100 will be handy on this pitch, Sri Lanka still have to bat last on this so they won't want to be chasing much.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's tail wagged significantly, adding more than 100 runs. Sangakkara was out for 144 and Prasanna Jayawardene made it to 49 but unluckily didn't make his 50. Newcomer Prasad scored a handy 36 and even Mendis got in on the act with 17. That took Sri Lanka to a first innings total of 396, a lead of 147.

Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble all got three wickets for the Indians.

India have struggled in reply, Prasad removed both Sehwag and Gambhir which slowed India's run rate. Then, the spin twins Muralitharan and Mendis joined the party, taking three wickets between them to leave India reeling at 5/161, a lead of only 12 runs. Dravid has top score with 46 not out and he and Laxman will need to score big on day four to give India any hope.

Massive advantage to Sri Lanka at this stage, they'll be looking to wrap it up tomorrow with as little fuss as possible.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Dravid went on to make 68, Tendulkar made 14 with an injured elbow (he won't be play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka), Kumble scored nine and Harbhajan Singh has just been dismissed for 26, LBW to Chaminda Vaas. There have been five LBW's in this innings out of the eight wickets that have been taken.

That leaves India, 8/266 after 85 overs, 70 of those have been bowled by Muralitharan and Mendis which shows just how much of a role the spinners have played in this test. Vaas, in contrast, has only bowled four overs. VVS Laxman is not out on 60 with India's lead up to 119. 53 overs remaining today so we could see a result if Sri Lanka can get the last two wickets without too much hassle.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Now Zaheer Khan runs himself out. Pushed to mid-off by Zaheer, Samaraweera misfielded so Zaheer set off for a run but Samaraweera recovered well and scored a direct hit at the non-striker's end with Khan short.

9/268, Dravid is playing with a twisted ankle and he's running out of partners! Ishant Sharma is the final man in with a runner also! Laxman and Sharma both have runners and with Tendulkar not playing the one-dayers, India might have to make some big changes for the one-day series.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

All out for 268, Sharma flicks Muralithran down the leg side but Warnapura is waiting at leg gully and takes the catch.

Laxman will stay not out on 61, a fighting innings with a twisted ankle. However, only Harbhajan Singh helped out in the lower order so Sri Lanka will only need 122 runs to win the game and the series. There's still three and half hours left in the day so we should see a result before stumps.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in some early trouble. Michael Vandort went on the attack early but was bowled by Harbhajan Singh and now Sangakkara is out after driving the ball to mid-off.

2/22 in the 7th over, exactly 100 to get for the win with a tad more than 38 overs to be bowled today.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Too easy for the Lankans, they didn't lose any more wickets in the chase and finished on 2/123, victorious by eight wickets. Warnapura made 54 not out and Jaywardene got 50, hitting the last ball of the for four to bring up his half century.

Sri Lanka should be proud of their efforts, the bowlers did the job in the first innings and were very good with the bat, getting themselves almost 150 runs in front of the Indians first innings total. Vaas, Prasanna Jayawardene and Prasad were brilliant with the bat and helped set up the win and let's not forget Sangakkara's innings which put Sri Lanka into a really strong position and ultimately got them into the lead.

India fought back with the willow but injuries and a lack of contributors cost them and despite getting two quick wickets, Sri Lanka proved to be superior.

So, Sri Lanka win by eight wickets and win the series 2-1. The series now moves onto the one-dayers with India due to play a practice game against on the 15th with the first ODI getting underway on the 18th at Dambulla.

Man of the Match: Kumar Sangakkara
Man of the Series: Ajantha Mendis

Re: India in Sri Lanka

The current series in Sri Lanka, has been a debacle.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were far too good for a young Indian side. Vaas bowled Gambhir with the second ball of the game and that was where the game ended as Sri Lanka went through the Indian line-up without too much hassle. Yuvraj Singh top scored with a very low 23 as India were all out for 146 from 46 overs. There were seven other batters scoring between 12 and 19. Patel and Ohja made India's score better than it could have been with a 29-run partnership for the final wicket, it turned out to be India's second highest.

For Sri Lanka, Vaas's second ball strike was his only wicket, Mendis took three, including four maiden overs and Muralitharan also got three wickets. Kulasekara took two and Thushara got the other wicket of Rohit Sharma.

Sri Lanka cruised to 2/147 from 34.5 overs, Mahela Jayawardene did the bulk of the scoring with 61 not out with Kupugedera making an undefeated 45. Sangakkara and Jayasuriya were the two wickets to fall, both failing to reach 20.

Munaf Patel did the damage with the ball, getting two wickets to go with his 15 with the bat. Zaheer Khan bowled well without luck but the game was always going to be out of reach so Sharma and Raina got a bowl at the end.

Too easy for Sri Lanka. The put the pressure on the young Indian line-up early and didn't relent as the wickets tumbled. The spin twins once again did the damage with Murali and Mendis accounting for six of the ten wickets taken, India just have no answers to them at the moment.

The Lankans lost a couple early but 146 wasn't going to be enough and they got home in a canter, winning by eight wickets.

Re: India in Sri Lanka

Haflway through the third game here. India scored 9/237 from their 50 overs. MS Dhoni settle his side in the middle order after another average showing from the Indian top order. Dhoni made 76 and Suresh Raina scored 53 to push India to a reasonable total. Rohit Sharma chipped in with a run-a-ball 32 towards the end of the innings.

Ajantha Mendis once again was the star, taking 3/56 from ten overs although he was expensive. His last over (the 49th) went for only one run and picked up two wickets, those of Harbhajan Singh and Dhoni from successive balls. Thushara and Kulesekara chimed in with two wickets each for the second game in a row.

Sri Lanka did well to restrict India, the wicket of Dhoni proved to be costly for the Indians as it blew any chance of them registering 250.

Going to be an intriguing chase.
