Inspired decisions

Thought I would open a thread for everyone to share those moments of inspired genius, that decision to try something different that pays off.

I'll start with mine this weekend.

While fielding we were against a guy who liked to drive through mid-on. As we had our off spinner bowling we had a long-on and deep square leg and I was fielding at straightish mid-wicket. I noticed that a lot of his drive through the mid-on region we upish, so I moved my self from mid-wicket to on the drive on the on side (catching), stood right next to the non-strike batsman and moved the long-on slightly wider, but left a large gap in the field between deep square and long-on. Next ball the batsman drags one from out side off through the gap for four, however I keep the field the same, next ball slightly fuller, a ball that he would have normally driven down the ground to long-on, this time tries to work it through the gap playing across the line misses it and is bowled. YOU BEAUTY!

What has been your greatest triumphs of the mental matter?

Re: Inspired decisions

Great idea for a thread, I love hearing about plans in cricket - especially when they come off.

Re: Inspired decisions

a sloger came into bat and he realy was wacking all are bowlers round the park we had every one on the boundry and the sixes just kept getting bigger and bigger so we decided to bowl wides so wide that he got a single :p then after a wile he got out cought on the boundry off a slower ball but he got like 50 odd

Re: Inspired decisions

Could have backfired if he'd caught on and turned down the extra run, he could have just stood there and accepted the extras until ye were forced to bowl at him.

I've found that most sloggers only have one or two shots, often cross-batted type shots like a pull or cut - at least over here where most of the really dangerous sloggers are hockey players during the winter. You have to try and bowl pretty full and at off stump - if they have a drive you are in trouble, but they'll probably try to block for a while and then get bored and play across a straight one. Works a good bit, but unless you're consistent it can be expensive.

Re: Inspired decisions

My greatest truimph was probably in a Saturday League game. There was a batsman driving me through cover and mid off every ball. So I went around the wicket and made sure I got it full and that it'd swing into leg stump. Lo and behold, it did and the batsman was bowled; as anyone would be, trying to cover drive a ball angling into leg stump.

Re: Inspired decisions

playing in a friendly game on sunday of old school boys, The batsmen plays an upish looking Cut shot misses the ball completely. My slip turns round and says

"Batsmen i dont like the spirit in which that shot was played"

The Batsmen says but you have a lovely pair of teeth,

Next ball straight to first slip!

Class Old School boy sledging! but inspired none the less!

Re: Inspired decisions

Ok this is from the Belgium vs. Switzerland match. I was bowling my third over and their opening batsman left one just outside off. My slip went upto him and said. "Ooo he's leaving them alone so close to the stumps, it's only a matter of times before he gets bowled." The batsman turned around and said. "Well at least I know where my off-stump is." and laughed, referring to when that slip fielder (also our opening batsman) got bowled. We were defending a very small target of 106 and I had enough of him defending and leaving everything so I bowled a yorker the next ball and he was bowled middle-stump. The slip walked upto to him and said. "What about your middle-stump mate, do you know where that is?"

Priceless!
