Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya qualify for 2011 World Cup

Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya have all qualified for the 2011 World Cup after all four sides secured their World Cup spots today in the final round of the ICC World Cup qualifying matches.

Kenya were too good for Ireland today, beating them by six wickets with two overs in hand. They were the last side to qualify, only just nudging out Afghanistan on Net Run Rate who were the surprise packet of the tournament.

Netherlands easily accounted for Canada in what was a dead rubber with both sides having already qualified for the World Cup. Canada's 208 was no match for the Dutch who were helped by an opening partnership of 167.

The surprise though was Afghanistan who today attained ODI status after defeating Namibia by 21 runs. The win was set-up with the bat after Mohammad Shehzad's 73 and the Nowroz Mangal's 78 took the Afghan side to 7/243. They defended the total well with Hamid Hassan taking 3/37 and Karim Khan 2/43.

Scotland retained their ODI status by thrashing an inpet UAE by 122 runs. Scotland and Afghanistan will hold ODI status for four years and will gain automatic entry into the 2009/2010 Intercontinental Cup.

Super stuff by Afghanistan. For a country that has been decimated through war over the past few years, this is really an achievement to saviour. They've shocked everyone with the form over the past few weeks and the have done very, very well.

No real surprises to see the main four qualify for the World Cup. Kenya would have been very nervous at 3/83 but Tikolo came through for them again to get them home. They seem to have declined over the past few years though, the heights they reached at the 2003 World Cup seem long ago now.

The expected four made it through. Good stuff from them and Afganistan. Congrats to them to get ODI status, that's huge.

Would have thought Scotland should have gotten in ahead of Kenya, but atleast the Dutch qualified and Dirk Nannes can destroy a few sides :D

Great to see the Afghans get one day status, although they are helped by the fact that they are pretty much full time cricketers. Their strength is that they are a real team, along with some excellent work in field where they back each other up all the way.

Scotland just scrapped through, at one point they could well have lost their one day status, which would have been blow, not least in terms of funding. Missing out on the world cup is bad enough.

well done to all sides able to qualify for the world cup.

i just feel sorry for any of the minnow teams having to verse world cricketing powers, like in the last world cup where australia and south africa in their pool completely made fun of ireland's and the dutch's attempts. although it does help the bigger sides get some confidence, but it is a little demeaning on the smaller sides that have tried to hard to get it and have done so well to be completely destroyed in the only time international media pay attention to them.

this year i will be barracking for the minnows more than ever.

Ireland actually made to quarter finals of the last world cup. Ireland fininshed 2 in there group and defeated Pakistian and tied with Zimbabwe. Ireland also defeated Bangladesh in the quarter finals.

What happened to beach boys Bermunda?

but if you were to go around the streets asking people about the ireland cricket team, they would all pretty much say they arent that good. i know they are good, its just that many people only notice these teams in the world cup and when the media shows that australia and south africa absolutely smash them that they are a bad team.

Re: Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya qualify for 2011 World Cup

But at the next World cup they get a minimum of 6 matches exposure on the big stage, so they all have a chance to win 3 games against fellow minnows and may struggle against a couple of top sides, but they are also a chance to cause an upset when they meet teams like Pakistan, NZ, England etc. Also I am sure the Aussies will be hoping that Bangladesh are in a different group :p

there is nothing to do about the issue that i was talking about beside getting the media to present things a little fairer, like their mistreating of the australian team, saying that australian cricket is dead and so forth. i have formed a disliking to all media lately and other people who make comments about the game without proper understanding and research. that is my annoyance for the day.

hope the irish and all the minnows do well, there is almost always at least one that causes a few upsets.

I just hope those that have ODI status get a few games against some Test nations. Probably just the lower ranked ones, unless they chlk up a few wins and then they can get a crack at the big teams.
ODI status by its own does little good if they can't get games to match the status.
