Really struggling for runs at the moment. If he continues to struggle how much longer will the selectors give him? Will he be automatically selected for One Day series considering he wont be around for the next World Cup?

You would think that he might like to be around for the Ashes.

Re: Matthew Hayden

Has to start making runs. Will probably play the one-day series but if he doesn't fire in the test series and struggles in the one-dayers I reckon that might be it for him.

Re: Matthew Hayden

Personally, I think they'll keep him, until after the one day series, simply because he's an aussie icon, then, they might phase him out.

He's still a good one-dayer though.

Re: Matthew Hayden

I think he's being selfish by not giving himself a definate end date. I think Langer touched on it in an article I read somewhere.

If he got his mind set that, yes, "I'm retiring on this day", he could then start to just enjoy his cricket and also not have the pressure from the public calling for his head all the time.

And if he doesn't make the call, then I'm sure the selectors will tap him soon enough! ;)

*cough*Klinger*cough*

But seriously, I think Hayden's had it. He came out yesterday and creamed three of the best drives you'll ever see and got himself out straight after, playing a nothing shot to a ball he didn't need to play at. Maybe in his prime in the early '00s he could have punched it for 4, but he's 38 (I think) and doesn't seem to want to play within the limitations that come with his age (reduced reflexes, vision). It puts a lot of pressure on Ponting, who is also in dreadful form, having to come in within the first 10 overs nearly every innning. His game needs an overhaul if he's going to make runs at the top level again, and given that he's nearly 40, it's not really a worthwhile endeavour for the Australians

On that note.

No time for Jacques (dodgy back), Klinger (one-season wonder) or Rogers (will turn 1000's off kids off cricket).

Time for CA to take a chance on young gun Phil Hughes. Give Haydo's the boxing day test as his farewell then give Hughes some time to adjust to the rigours of Test Cricket before the ashes.

Thats my opinion.

I whole heartedly agree.

Re: Matthew Hayden

bring in the young blokes hughes deserves his chance making truckloads of runs and another century today for nsw surely must be very close, hayden time to go after a great career

Re: Matthew Hayden

Hughes plays for the right state in teh Baggy Blue so that won't do him no harm.

Last player to get a crack, as a pretty raw first class cricketer, was Pup Clarke.

Maybe time to introduce a young man, let him develop into the player that we want and need. Solid 10+ year opening bat.

BUT

I reckon it will go something like this:

Hayden -----> Gone

Hussey -----> Open

Hodge ------> bat 4 or 5

Re: Matthew Hayden

I'm a big Hayden fan and yes has been struggling, but you can never discount a champion. He is a big game player and the next test is at his favourite venue, always lift for boxing day. He needs to make a decision on his future pretty quickly and when he does, the runs will come.

I have to agree with you here mate. Who do you personally think will end up being his replacement when and if he retires?

Re: Matthew Hayden

Marsh, Hughes or Jaques to come in once Hayden goes. A couple of months ago, Marsh would have been the obvious choice but Hughes has closed the gap quite quickly in my opinion. Jaques' fitness would be concern for the selectors, they can't afford another players with a Shane Watson type medical record.

Hussey is settled as a middle-order player and when playing well holds the middle and lower order together. I really don't see the point in moving him to bring in Hodge who isn't in great form anyway scoring 245 runs at only 35. Steve Maggofin has made more runs and has a better average so far this season.

The selectors won't make someone another makeshift opener in such a short period of time (Remember Katich was thurst into that role). They'll pick a specialist for Hayden's spot. Chirs Rogers might come into consideration but I'm not sure how CA felt about his move to Victoria this season.

I would say either Hughes or Marsh. Both are young and could potentially play 10+ years for Australia. Jaques would be thereabout but there are still doubts about his back.

Brad Hodge is probably my favourite cricketer ever but there is no way he will ever play a Test barring severe injuries again. He has his chance and was just very unlucky that he was around when Australia didn't lose many matches and no-one really got injured. Middle order is as settled, Hussey to stay 4.

Hughes is the man for the opening job when Hayden vacates.
Marsh 94 4 day innings for 4 hundreds.
Hughes 26 4 day innings for 3 hundreds.

ANOTHER thing... How come Matthew Hayden has to set a date for his retirement? Surely he can just keep playing as long as his form warrants it and he is doing well enough to get picked to play, i don't see the point in him saying he wants to play to x date or retire after x series.

Re: Matthew Hayden

I think that Hodge and McGain are in the same boat as Hayden. (too old)

I reckon it will probably be Phil Hughes who is already opens the batting for NSW. He's awesome to watch.
