New 20-20 bat

Re: New 20-20 bat

First thoughts scream gimmick.

More info here - Mongoose

I agree with what they say, the reduced blade size has allowed them to not only increase the sweet spot but the wood behind it, which of course increases power. The longer handle also means there is more opportunity for a faster swing. I can see this working but there are doubts.

Less surface area means less margin for error. The average club player is an average club player for a reason, reducing the target area (even if when it is hit it goes twice as far) is not going to benefit everyone. I will say that I'm surprised that the ICC passed this bat (even though it meets the material requirements, and it's not actually making the bat wider/longer) but time will tell as to the outcome I guess.

Re: New 20-20 bat

It'll be interesting to see if it catches on, but my initial thoughts being the Luddite that I am a lot of the time is 'It's just not cricket'! If it does catch on please let it be restricted to 20/20 and not real cricket.

You can bet your bottom dollar that some flash Harry will walk out with one in the next month or so.

I'm in two minds about it, on one hand less embrace new innovations. On the other hand, does it really fit in with the spirit of the game? It's already a batsman game, do they really need more help?

Re: New 20-20 bat

I've done a fair bit of work at Mongoose and therefore may be a little biased but I think this has potential to revolutionise 20/20 certainly. Cricket almost has 2 different games now, Tests and 20/20's yet we're still using basically the same equipment that was used 100 years ago despite the changes that have been made to the game itself.

The bat no doubt does ping and from everyone who's used it (Club and Internationals) the feedback has been very good. When you go out to score runs in a 20/20 you don't want to be using the shoulders/splice on a normal bat. The middle is where you aim for and it's the same with this bat, you'll reap the rewards more too due to an increased middle length and performance.
