NFL got grand plans. ICC got head up a**

Well, looks like the NFL has made the big decision of staging two regular
season games in foreign countries every year. Doubt this will whip up any
interest in American football but at least the NFL is thinking outside the
box. ICC? Won't do so much as stage a 20/20 ODI exhibition in the USA or
Canada.

Well, they wanted to play that tri-series that eventually wound up in Malaysia over here, but there weren't any suitable venues in the US, only in Toronto. Maybe next year.

And as for exhibitions, the West Indies played in New York this summer. They brought a lot of their current top players, didn't they? And there's going to be that big Legends match up in Toronto next year.

..and all these so-called "matches" in the USA have done nothing but clearly
demonstrate how amateurish cricket organizers are
compared to USA pro organizations. Everthing the
NFL (and MLB) does overseas it does first class. Best stadia,
intensive promotion, best teams. And what have we ever
got with all the cricket matches staged in North America?
Second rate teams or players ("legends" matches or
teams with at best three or four top players); crappy
club quality grounds; poor promotion (American media
doesn't even have a clue these matches are played in
the USA and organizers couldn't care less); meaningless
ad hoc games (will we ever see
a match between two English or Aussie first class teams playing one of their regularly scheduled matches here?).

timmy,

are you from the MLC boards (now defunct)? if yes, you are well aware of the big problems that have plagued USA cricket for years, so are you surprised? the NFL i'd say is the best run sports org in the world, hands down.

No.The major problem they have, like soccer, is they are just very very sh*t.

The thing that would actually get people to watch over here would be promotion and TV time. If playing in Rogers Centre is acceptable, they can play there anytime in the winter. I would like to see a one or two day 20/20 tournament featuring Canada, and a few other international sides. Then what must be done is getting TSN (or some other outlet) to air the matches LIVE (even if it requires a time-buy on the part of the ICC/CCA. 20/20 is clearly the most accessible form for the novice fan, as the strategy involved is minimal, and balls go high, far, and loud. Not sure if it will ever happen, but that is the kind of event necessary if Canadian cricket is to become a widely popular sport.

the USA/Australia soccer discussion has been moved HERE

Re: NFL got grand plans. ICC got head up a**

It's kind of hard to get any interest or promote a sport that many Americans have never heard of, let alone show a spark of interest in the game. Nobody is going to pay whatever money is needed to be paid to play at a good stadium (we got any decent ovals in the US), for PR work and so forth, when there is no guarantee that anyone will even turn up to watch.

The NFL and MLB at least have a profile outside the US, just look at NFL Europe. Many Aussies also have some interesting in the NFL. At least the base interest is there, but cricket is simply a non-entity for the typical American. The ICC is probably loathe to promote the game simply because the level of interest and knowledge is so low.

Re: NFL got grand plans. ICC got head up a**

Couldn't disagree with you more. And just how did the NFL establish its
"profile" abroad? It was willing to make the investment to raise this
profile. The very first NFL games in Europe were poorly attended. Those
who attended knew nothing about the game. I'm sure the NFL lost money on those early promotion ventures and
I think they're subsidizing their European league to this day. MLB, a while back, had
planned some games in Britain which included such big names as Sammy
Sosa (the games were rained out). Americans been promoting baseball to the pommies for over a hundred
years without success but this hasn't detered MLC from still trying. The simple fact is the ICC just hasn't got the guts, the smarts, or the inventiveness to raise the game's profile in places like the USA (though
they seem to want to do this in such ridiculous places as China). Also, this belief that Americans would have
"no interest" in a sport like cricket couldn't be further from the truth.
Anyone who's worked with Americans at cricket, including myself, can
testify they show great enthusiasm for the game. In fact, its a
completely "natural" extension of what they know from baseball. And
that is exactly what the ICC or everyone else who's "promoted"
cricket in the USA just don't get. Cricket has to be marketed to Americans
as an extention of, a more fun and varied form of, what Americans know
with baseball. NOT as a sport OPPOSED to baseball.
