Cricket could return to the Commonwealth Games as early as 2018 if the International Cricket Council (ICC) accepts an invitation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

It would be wonderful to see T20 cricket (or even 50-over cricket, less preferably) at the Comm Games. As Cricinfo commentators have wisely pointed out, however, the Test-playing Commonwealth nations would have to open up a window in their calendars. One person even suggested following the lead of the Olymic footballers (soccer players), and have the cricketing nations send their Under 19s teams (or their 'A' teams) and allow up to three senior players in the squad.

Personally, I would like to see the Commonwealth Test teams (AUS, BAN, ENG, IND, NZ, PAK, RSA, SL) send their 'A' teams to the Games to compete alongside the full squads of the ten nations that make up the West Indies, as well as Bermuda, Canada, Guernsey, Jersey, Kenya, Namibia, PNG, Scotland, and any other ICC affiliate who wants to field a team. (Here's the full list of Commonwealth nations.) That's at least 26 nations playing in a cricketing competition! Following this format would mean that all the games would be considered domestic T20 games, and it would even out the competition a little bit more. Playing T20s would allow for the extra games to be played by the extra nations, and it would ultimately be a terrific spectacle for cricket.
