Raina works hard at nets to 'cement' his place in side
INDIA's batting prodigy Suresh Raina is well aware of the appreciation he is getting the world over. But, that hasn't changed his simplicity, or his ability to handle pressure. After his sparkling 81 against England in the second one-dayer in the recent home series, the British media compared him to master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar.
Raina's next mission is the forthcoming one-day series in West Indies. To tackle the bouncy and fast tracks there, the 19-year-old has decided to do special training on a cemented wicket with synthetic cricket balls from Thursday.
"The wickets are bouncy there and to cope with that I have decided to do at least one week training on cement wickets," said Raina on Wednesday. The young player said the momentum of the team was superb and everyone was expecting a fruitful Windies tour. "The team has set a world record of successful run chases, and every one is doing fine," said Raina, who admitted that the recent series was a great learning experience for him. "I am just graduating to big-time cricket. And, my only aim is to win as many matches for the team as possible," he said, adding, "the team's bio-mechanic expert (Ian) Frazer has helped me a lot in enhancing my fitness."
Raina, who has so far scored 412 runs with three half-centuries in 21 ODIs at an average of 37.45 after making his international debut in July last at Dambulla against Sri Lanka, claimed that his best knock was yet to come."I always concentrate on my team's winning, instead of my own score. But, I feel that my best is yet to come." The southpaw also accepted that performances in the ODI series against England and Pakistan at Abu Dhabi had boosted his confidence to bat with ease in the middle. "Both the series were a confidence booster and I would like to maintain this on the Caribbean tour."
On coach Greg Chappell, "He always helps me to improve my mental strength and I find a lot of improvement on that front." "Besides, all the youngsters in the team get good support from seniors like Dravid, Yuvraj, Kaif and Veeru."
