Reaction time/reading the ball

hi guys, im new to this site and this site is like the best becuase of all the advise and help people give to eachother.

anyways i just wanted some advice and what i could do to improve my reaction time/reading the ball. I'm 15 and i open in the batting. i dont know why but its hard for me to read the ball out of their hands and see how far it will pitch. I tend to start adjusting and deciding what shot i should play after the ball has bounced. whether it be landing short or full. this means that i cant play much shots becuase i cant read the ball quickly enough to beable to decide what shot to play. So becuase of this i will usually block out most balls all the time. and with the bad balls that go out wide or something, i will try to hit it but i always get beaten becuase i am slow to respond to the ball.
Thats pretty much why i open becuase i will usually block all day and block out the good bowlers.

sorry if this doesnt make sense to you guys, but if it does can i get any advice please?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

A lot of what you want to achieve comes with experience and the more you practice, the better you'll become at picking up the length/line earlier.

You can try to introduce reaction drills by using different coloured balls or by investing in a reaction ball, which will help hand to eye co-ordination.

Really, it just comes down to practice. As Mas Cambios said, there are plenty of drills designed to test and improve your reactionary capacities, but in all honesty, practicing against real life bowlers is probably the easiest and most effective way of helping you.

As you are exposed to more bowling, you'll find that your ability to pick up subtle cues from the bowler as to where the ball is likely to pitch will improve dramatically. This will probably happen completely unconciously.

My advice would be to hit the nets as often as you can; face as many bowlers as you can (and face the best bowlers you can). At 15 you need not worry about how many runs your making - only whether or not your achieving the goals you set yourself.

Re: Reaction time/reading the ball

ive found... for reaction time, get a team m8 to peg throwdowns at u from a shorter distance then the 22 yard pitch..... this helped me get my bat down quicker and react to the length of the ball....

i might sound like a parrot, but the other boys r right... the more practice u have at the crease and nets, the easier all this will come 2 u...

good luck with it m8..

Re: Reaction time/reading the ball

where are you looking? Are you watching the ball all the way down, or just picking it up from the pitch? Do you ever see it leave the bowler's hand? Do you watch it in his hand as he runs in?

Re: Reaction time/reading the ball

Your aim should be to be able to judge length as quickly as possible from the bowlers hand. Research has shown better players are able to judge length at the point of delivery while worse players take longer to pick up the right length and line.

As has been said that is experience rather than reaction time. Focus on the ball as closely as you can at the point of release. Decide the length as early as you can see it the move quickly into position. However, once in position play the shot as late as you can.

It's really a matter of timing all your judgement and movements together.
