Retro Reel: Gavaskar LBW Lillee 70
February 1981 - Aus-Ind Test series:
The 3rd Test of the series was played At Melbourne. The Indian captain was Sunil Gavaskar. After conceeeding a lead of nearly 200 in the first innings, in the second ask Gavaskar and Chauhan built a good opening stand.
During the crucial first wicket partnership, Lillee bowled an incoming delivery that deviated a little too much(who knows if there was inside edge or not?), and eventually the ball thudded onto the pads.
The aussies went up immediately for a big appeal and Rex Whitehead officiating in the 3rd Test of his 4 Test career adjudged Gavaskar LBW.
But the batsman indicated he had edged the ball and was leaving the field. Suddently it appears that he heard something from somewhere and he came back to the wicket and asked urged his partner Chetan Chauhan to follow him.
The Indian team manager intervened before Chauhan had left the field, ordering him to continue, and the match resumed.
(India won by 59 runs in the end )
The video (suprisingly very clear) show the entire episode - the delivery, the appeal, Lillee pointing to Gavaskar's pad, a very reluctant Chauhan being pushed and dragged(?) by his partner(and captain) out of the ground.
