Shoulder Injury

on 6 may this year i was playing a fun game of cricket and dived for a ball at first slip away to my left. it was a bloody good catch, if i say so myself and left me at full stretch mid air, but i landed awkwardly. my elbow rammed into the ground and left a divot of large proportions, which proceeded to push my shoulder towards my head. obviously the shoulder is not meant to move like that and my upper arm moved back so that my elbow was twisted behind my back, then i rolled on it. this left me in all sorts of pain and i was immediately taken off the field, to find i had a very badly dislocated shoulder. i went into the hospital and had it put back in place after much amount of pain and more morphine then an addict and they thought they discovered (please excuse my lack of medical terms) a very small fracture the the very top and very end of the shoulder, right on the tip (he said something about AC joint or something?), but they werent sure and said that if it was it would be fine. three weeks later, still in great amounts of pain (and seeming ignorance by the hospital, but thats just the queensland health system) they called me back, two weeks after they said they would, and told me to go in to check on any soft tissue damage. they sent me for an ultra sound after discovering my lack of movement, and they found that although the muscles, ligaments, tendons and whatever else there is to do damage to, were in place, and although they were very stretched nothing was torn. they gave me exercises to do on my own, as well as i went to three physio sessions and that improved my strength and movement a lot, but the shoulder is still very weak. i can lift a fairly normal amount of weight with that arm, but once it gets above my head i cant hold it for long before my shoulder gives in. it doesnt hurt, but rather just gives up. i have also noticed a lack of power in there, i am known as a big hitter and at a winter cricket carnival i went to last weekend i went for a hit straight back over the bowlers head, timed and middled it to perfection and it went about three quarters the way to the boundary, instead of the usual 10 metres past it. i am right handed and i found that in fielding as well i couldnt move it as fast as usual to field the ball. the doctor and physio both said that it should be all good now, which they said was very surprising given the amount that my shoulder went through and that when i went in my arm was literally back to front. i dont want to go back in and see about the strength so i thought i should try, of all places, a cricket forum. any way of building power back into that arm? it doesnt hurt much at all anymore and it just feels weak. will just general exercise build it back up or should i go with a more rigorous method? the exercises that im doing dont seem to be working and i want to get back to fielding in the slips instead of down at fine leg and hitting bowlers for six as a tailender. by power i mean the strength + speed definition too, im having trouble just moving it quickly, say the take a catch to my left in slips i cant move it quick enough although i pick the ball up early. any help or suggestions?

Re: Shoulder Injury

Mate I may be talking out of my **** or from the perspective of an old bloke, but having done it on May 6th isn't this all a bit soon? Shouldn't you be taking it really easy for a while longer?

Re: Shoulder Injury

its just that i havent been feeling anything in the way of pain and the doctors said that once that goes it is fine to start exercising it to a fuller extent, as much as the threshold is at the time. i have been doing that for about half a month now and it doesnt seem to be improving. the physio said about 1 month after the sessions, so thats about now, that i should be able to use it and play cricket, all be it carefully, again. i know the injury itself maybe sounds a little frightening (to me anyway) and it hurt like hell, but the doctors were very surprised to find that nothing major was damaged, and all that i have to do is exercise it and i should have felt major major improvements by now. thats why im asking here for.

Re: Shoulder Injury

Hi Boris,

Actually Dave is quite right. Stop beating yourself up; you are doing great. Keep up the good work.

Problem is, these 'experts' you have been talking to are fantastic... they are there when you need them and can really save your live... they are worth double their weight in gold and we really cannot do without them...

However... they are not specialists when it comes to cricket and really have little idea of the forces and demands involved. Yes, you should be feeling a lot better by now and it sounds as if you are. "A lot better" in their terms means "back to the normal everyday lifestyle". If they knew what you were putting your body through with your sport, they would say "NO!", "NEVER!".

Give it a while. I am out of the country at the moment [actually, I am surrounded by Aussies in Thailand] but I will touch base with you when I am back at my desk, probably next week, and I will ask more and give you more advice.

Until then... take it easy :)

Re: Shoulder Injury

thanks for that.

i know i should wait a while its just there are games coming up soon and it isnt hurting anymore.

until you return...

Re: Shoulder Injury

Hi Boris,

How are things now?

Can you tell me what exercises you are doing to strengthen the shoulder?

Can you confirm that this was your left shoulder?

Re: Shoulder Injury

yes it was my left shoulder, my non bowling arm (thankfully).

well i am back playing another sport a play pretty avidly with volleyball and i am only having trouble setting the ball as my right arm is able to propell the ball a bit harder and faster leaving an innaccurate set, but other then that it was good with volleyball (except i did land on it once and i felt a bit of a twinge, but that lead to nothing). not hurting just feeling a little weak still.

as for the excercises, i dont know their names but i will try and describe them.

there is one where i use a towel over my right shoulder then grab the bottom with my left hand and pull the towel back over my right shoulder pulling my left hand up. this is a stretching excercise, not a strength one as such. then for the rest of the stretching i do just the general shoulder stretches as you would expect as normal, this is the only one i found a bit different.

for the strengthing ones i use different weights (started smaller now im getting up to about 3kg on that arm with this one) and starting with my arm beside my body and lift it away from the body to a horizontal position. i hold it for a couple of seconds and slowly bring that back down. i do the same forwards and backwards too.
another one i start with my arm beside my body again and lift the weight directly verticle straight up the side of my body.
i also have a slightly painful one that i do with a very small weight and i start with my arm in that position again and take my arm behind my back bending my elbow and taking the weight as far up my back as possible. i was told not to do this too much though.
also pulling excercises although i find this hard as i have no equipment enabling me to do so. i sometimes get another person to pull back as i pull towards myself with my arm on a horizontal straight out in front of me.
also just lying on my side and lifting my arm upright for a few sets of 10 reps with my elbow straight.
do lots more stretching excercises regularly though. they seem to feel like they are helping. the strenthening ones feel a bit pointless.
i have to admit there was a couple that i didnt pay attention to when the physio was telling me... i was too busy trying to work out why the hell he was hurting me more then before even though he said it was helping :D

Re: Shoulder Injury

This all sounds really good Boris. One thing I would say, once the soft tissue in this area has elongated, it is unlikely that they will return to pre-injury state so you will be at risk of dislocation again :(

The exercises are good, do keep them up.

Re: Shoulder Injury

ive dislocated my other shoulder before, although not as bad as this one, and i have noticed that it felt different for a long time, like a loose sort of feeling. i will make sure that i keep it as safe as possible and slow down and possibly (doubt it :p) stop playing sports.

i will keep you posted on any progress.

thanks heaps, good to know i was worrying over nothing.

Re: Shoulder Injury

No need to give up sport Boris... as if! :) Just keep working on strengthening this area, you will be fine.
