side-on or chest-on(front-on)

hi, i've got this ability of being able to bowl side-on or chest-on(front-on). i do them equally aswell and both feel natural. I was wondering what would people say is the better one, why is it better and which one i should develop further?

thanks phil

well I'll go for which ever makes you feel more comfortable, since you ball well with both kind of actions, i think perhaps you should try to alter those actions in the over, just to make the batsman wondering and perhaps he might very well be surprised, but don't over do it.

Get a coach to note your backfoot position with both of your actions. I'd be willing to bet that it points the same direction both times. If it points sideways, persevere with a side on action and if it points straight then go with a front on action.

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

Well you can't really know where you back foot is when you're bowling.

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

Manee is giving pretty sound advice there, get someone to spot your back foot then report back. You may be right in that you're foot adapts but it's better to check else you may risk an injury.

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

i say i do it right because the lancashire coach at district say's i do it right. so im not injuring myself with an incorrect action. so, what are the benefits of each? like which swings more, seam movement, bounce etc

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

Some people say side-on makes swinging the ball easier but several front-on bowlers also move the ball consistently. The short answer is that they are more or less the same. Pick whichever one seems to work the best for you. I think picking one and working with it would make more sense than trying to keep both going, but I understand picking could be hard.

Good luck with whatever you choose ;)

I still am sceptical as I have never met someone to be able to do both off a full run; get a coach to video you doing three balls of each action in the nets (ie. with a ball off full distance).

No real benefits in either as technically speaking you are 'face on' when delivering a ball - the side on\chest on thing is more for the approach and you get to the point to deliver the ball.

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

Side on bowlers bowl faster than front on bowlers because side on bowlers can engage their hips by driving them into the ball on delivery. Front on bowlers cannot as the hips ALREADY point forwards.

Historically, sideways bowlers have been faster. Not too many serious paced front on bowlers ever (you can count them on one hand).

So if you want pace and accuracy, go sideways. Swing is irrelevant to feet position as you swing the ball from the wrist so choose whatever if the easiest and go from there.

Re: side-on or chest-on(front-on)

i've decided on side-on because it gets me through the crease easier i always feel i stutter 2 much when i bowl chest-on.
