Former Indian speedster Javagal Srinath has been appointed an International Cricket Council match referee, the Indian cricket board announced on Monday.
Srinath, 36, replaces former England batsman Chris Broad. Srinath will be the first Indian to be on the elite ICC panel since November 2003.
The panel has for the first time been divided into two tiers — full time and part time.
While former Sri Lanka player Ranjan Madugalle, Mike Procter of South Africa, Jeff Crowe of New Zealand and Roshan Mahanama of Sri Lanka are full time officials, the second tier includes ex-West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd, Australian Alan Hurst and Srinath.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India had nominated the names of former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, Robin Singh, Kiran More, Shivlal Yadav and Srinath, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.
ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed and chairman of the ICC cricket committee Sunil Gavaskar conducted the ICC Referees' panel review.
Srinath, currently a television commentator, took 236 wickets in 67 Tests and 315 in 229 one-day internationals.
