Superstitions and the average cricketer!

It's often said that cricketers are a strange bunch not least in the number of superstitions that they have.

For example, I know of at least 3 players who refuse to wash their kit when they feel that they are in a good run of form and a number of players who have to put on the right pad before the left or else their game is doomed from the start.

Personally, I like to be the last one out of the changing room, not sure why but it normally gives me a few minutes to clear my head, which always seems to help my game. Other than that, it's always the same order at the crease, which is to take a guard, look around, take guard again, view the field then get ready for the first ball.

What are your thoughts in superstitions and what are yours?!

I'm not sure but I think I have a common one in that I must put my right boot on before my left.

Also, I always get fully kitted up whilst waiting to bat, even my gloves, but then have to take them off when waliking to the crease before putting them back on again.,

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

i dont have any :cool superstitions are stupid i dont care which leg goes out first or which side i wake up on its rubbish.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

I don't really have any superstitions, but the process of having them is reassuring for a lot of people and helps them get ready to play. So from a scientific view it actually works.

I'm more particular about my routine than a superstition. I like to eat certain things, be at the ground by a certain time, pack my kit in a certain way, get at least a few balls in the net batting and keeping and go through a decent warm up.

I'm not sure if it's borderline autistic or superstition but I get uncomfortable if I don't stick to my routine!

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

Tap my bat 4 times before each ball, gets very tiresome :p. When bowling i just try have a quick shout at the field telling them to be on their toes.

*then do a triple double mega flip*

Then Bowl :D

It's quite amusing watching some people at the crease as I'm sure it does bring out the latent OCD in their personalities.

The ones to watch are the ones who have to adjust their gloves, then touch their face, walk down the wicket, tap it, walk back, tap the crease, adjust helmet etc.

It makes you tired just watching!

You are right though, by being comfortable and having a routine it does help people perform better.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

My "routine," i dont call them superstitions ;)
My routine for batting changes, but usually,

1. Get pads on at the very start of our batting innings.

2. Get as far away from the boys as possible.

3. When going in, stretch on the way in.

4. Do a bit of gardening and check pads and gloves.

5. Two taps of my bat whilst the bowler is getting to his mark.

6. 3 taps in run up.

Bowling, i dont have many, but im one of those talkers who never shut up :p Either to my own team, the batsmen or just myself.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

i got a wierd one i always like to wear the right shoe in the right leg and the left shoe in the left. none apart from that.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

Glad to hear that you manage that one ok.

Anyway, anyone got any serious ones to add?

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

I never tap my bat really, just place it on the ground when the bowler gets to his mark, check my feet then look up, have my bat halfway up (Jaquesy style) and bend down a bit ready to play my shot. Hard to describe. But i dont really have any superstitions.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

I don't have any whacky superstitions.
The only thing I do that is on a routine basis, is if Iam opening, then I always face the first ball.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

My superstition or habit is to proceed to the crease and without strapping the gloves;then taking guard at middle and leg stump; adjusting the thigh pad, helmet, cricket box and then strap the gloves tightly:D.
Taking my time as far as possible so as to furstate the bowler :cursing:;maybe i get a first lollipop delivery.
In between also i have a habit to adjust my gloves and my cricket box.
At that time; I enjoy to look at the bowlers face.

Re: Superstitions and the average cricketer!

I tap the same as simbazz but just 2 taps before bowler runs up, one during run up and i raise the bat slightly before release. If I dont do this it doesnt feel right. I batted against one spinner late last season he only had a two step run up!! he proper messed my ritual up and i didnt feel comfortable at all becasue i couldnt get my one tap in.
