Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

Ive gone and ordered myself a New Masuri Wicket keeping lid (with a Ti grill after watching Flynn)

Its not because i'm afraid of being hit in the face but i'm going with the theory that it will eliminate any doubt in the back of my mind. If i'm standing up its usually with a cap and pair of oakleys and i feel comfortable.

But ive now got to the stage where i want to stand up to the quicker bowlers of around 60-70mph, i have been practicing recently and dont have a problem with taking the ball or the pace or bounce. But i just have a niggling feeling at the back of my mind about getting a top edge or dodgy bounce.

Do any other Keepers on here Wear lids when standing up?

i know its a different class but mcCullum wears one, and i rate him highly as well as Dohni.

any thoughts

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

The wicketkeeper for my school team wears a helmet when standing up, to spinners or medium pacers, but all the various ones at my club don't.

As an aside, I once saw the opposition keeper break his nose from not wearing a helmet. He was standing up to a medium pacer and the ball hit middle stump, bounced up and hit him flush on the hooter mid-celebration!! Hilarious until everyone realised it was fairly serious; he had to go to hospital cos it wouldn't stop bleeding.

i have had bloody noses before, i just think it will remove an element of doubt from the back of my mind, and let me concentrate on my game and watching the ball into my hands!

Be careful on hot days. In some leagues, if the Keeper leaves his helmet on the ground (usually behind him) and the ball hits it... 5 penalty runs :D

blooming wicketkeepers ay! i make sure my slip is in control of the Lids and make sure they are far enough back!

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

I have an update for those who are interested. I wore my Lid for the first time on saturday in a league game. I was quite surprised that i felt more secure with it on.

The clincher was when i was standing up to one of our fast bowlers. The oppo's captain decided to play across the line, he managed to hit the ball twice with the bat straight into his mouth. Still standing i asked him if he was ok, offered a glass of water. He spat out a load of blood and a tooth infront of me!

every one rushed over, turns out we had to hunt for the other 2 teeth he lost. so 3 in total!

Lid is staying as far as i'm concerned!

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

Never wash lost teeth with water, rinse in milk, if you have some handy, and push them straight back as soon as possible.

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

to be fair i think two of them had broken off one still had a root!

would have made a nice addition to the wicket?

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

I wear one in indoor nets, but never have in a game. Whats the benefit of the keeping lid?

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

well if i remember correctly, its masuri's new composite construction. Shorter Peak on the front for improved vision, less material on the back i.e its cut up a little bit to reduce weight.

i'm quite happy with wearing it. ive now started to stand up to faster bowling! took a nice stumping this weekend from one of the faster bowlers which i would not have had from standing up!

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

I always wear a lid keeping mainly because of when the ball hits the stumps, the amount of times iv been hit by bails and balls when theyve bowled a guy is ridiculous.

It also make me feel more secure down legside when the batsmen is sweeping as it means i don't have to worry about top edges.

Re: Taken The Plunge! (wicketkeeping)

generally i dont have any legside problems and its very rare anyone sweaps in our leagues!

i find my lid really comfortable now!

Update, a Helmet does not protect you from a flying bail!

i now have a round bruise where the end of the bail hit me square in teh nose through the Gril!!

That's bad, at least it was only the nose. No harm in having a war wound though to show off though!
