Tips on Outswing

Hi guys, I am the opening bowler for my team i bowl around 100k and am looking to bowl some outswing to add some more intensity with my bowling, any tips that would help me outswing the ball, i know all the basics but it just doesnt seem to swing for me, i get inswing fine but am just troubling with outswing.

Some people will say it's about wrist position, some will say its about using the seam as a runner, some will say it's about how hard you grip the ball.

The key is to experiement with different methods until you find what works.

Re: Tips on Outswing

the only variable that you can really quantify is the seam position in flight (this is what gets the ball swinging, in combination with the rough/smooth surfaces of the ball). grip, wrist position, delivery action, etc can vary from bowler to bowler with the same end results.

i think the easiest way to analyse your bowling and adjust it to swing the ball has got to be slow motion video. you can pick up cameras and camcorders capable of recording at slow motion with high enough quality to see the seam for about £200-300 now, and quite a few camcorders have the feature so if youve already got one have a look. thats certainly not a cheap learning tool, but its invaluable.

theres no other way you can really analyse your bowling to see what youre doing wrong. the only other option is to experiment and see what works, but theres no guarantees that youll ever figure it out. if your eyesight is good then buy yourself a white cricket ball and put black insulating tape around the seam so that its really easy to see the seam in flight. thats the next best thing, youve just got to aim to have the seam upright, stable, and pointing towards 1st/2nd slip with the rough side on the left.

index & middle finger together, thumb on the underside, of course this is all along the seam, and the only way to learn is practise in the nets. Also, bowl a bit slower and build your pace intil you find the pace you can swing the ball the best at. get the ball on a full length, but not a full toss, to get maximum swing, and have the rough side on the left. the seam must be upright and straight to make it swing. get the grip and try throwing a ball like this until you master keeping it straight.
