West Indies squad for champions trophy?? what the hell?

Im very heartbroken, why is there unkown players, no gayle,sarwan,chanderpaul, taylor, all randoms newbs

The players went on strike about 6 weeks ago. West Indies 4th XI recently lost a test series to Bangladesh.

There's talk about breaking the West Indies up into national teams (Jamiaca, Trinidad, Barbados etc), none of whom would be good enough to compete in the top tier of teams).

in the American magazine The Economist, before the IPL season, there was a reference to some Americans trying to save the WIndies by bankrolling the upgrades/ repairs to the world cup stadiums on condition that they stay together- or played as the Leeward Isles and Windward Isles. nothing has been said about it since but it was an interesting article on the state of WIndies cricket. the article claimed that any extra revenue is being demanded by the players, plus they want to have freedom to endorse companies opposed to the official sponsors of the national teams, scaring off potential sponsors; this means they don't have enough money for player development or maintaining the grounds they inherited from the world cup. the article goes on to claim that a lot of the National Associations are close to bankruptcy.

West Indian cricket has been in a mess for a long time, this is just the beginning of the pay off. The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised to see the individual islands competing before long.

the end of the WIndies would have to be the end of world cricket as we know it, wouldn't it?
with India being the financial powerhouse of world cricket and three of the more important associations (Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka) in and around the Indian Ocean it sets the stage for a new world body. where does that leave England and New Zealand? or Pakistan for that matter.
Bangladesh and Zimbabwe would be left out, Jamaica as the strongest national board might be left in- but the rest would be equivalent to Bermuda who have never made a world cup. leave Barbados and some of the others in and you have to make room for the Netherlands, Canada and Ireland.
so what is likely to happen out of that jumble- an IPL style contest between state/ province teams and a four nations world league (five if you allow for England)?

It wouldn't be pretty but then again the various Islands have pretty much existed under an uneasy truce for a number of years. It's not something which is at boiling point at the moment but on the other hand if it was motioned it would certainly have its backers.

that's true- weren't Bermuda a member and then pulled out just before the WIndies got test status?

I'm confussed, People like Gayle, Sarwan, chandelpaul all play test's. The ICC should give them a hand

To keep it simple, before the tests with Bangladesh pretty much all of the 'recognised' West Indian team went on strike, for a myriad of reasons. From how much they were paid, who they could seek sponsorship deals with to who paid for medical care and equipment, pretty much the whole caboosh.

Numerous players hit out at how unprofessional the West Indies board was at times and how after being exposed to the way that other international players were treated they wanted parity. Though money plays a part in it, it's not the be all and end all. Some of it boils down to how they train and the facilities that they are able to use as well as having tours which are well run, allowing them to concentrate on the cricket and not worrying whether or not they have plane tickets/clothing/hotel rooms etc.

In response to the strike the West Indies board took a hard line approach and pretty much selected a scratch squad, most of them coming from the Combined Campuses and Colleges side. Some players with international experience were brought back (Tino Best for example) and others have drifted back since the end of the Bangladesh tests (Daren Powell). However, the West Indies board seem unwilling to budge, likewise the players hence the lack of Gayle and co.

This impasse is far from being resolved and has opened up many questions about the viability of the West Indies as a whole. The Islands has always worked together but the relationships can be hard work and it would be little surprise to see the likes of Jamaica go it alone.

Of course the whole episode is more complex than the summary above and it stretches back a number of years.

Bermuda have made a world cup - Group B, 2007 in West Indies
