How are your wickets taken with wrist spin? Do you hit the stumps the majority of the time or are your wickets primarily from catches, LBW's and stumpings? Can you log your wickets and how they occured in this thread as a part of a survey I'm conducting. Additionally - is there data anywhere that tells you what Warnes ratio was?

Me first - last game I played in....

Hit the stumps x 1
Caught in the slips x 1

That kind of thing. As an aside you could in a seperate section mention dropped catches and near misses in the field. I'm not really interested in near misses on the stumps or LBW's not given, but the catches that go down because of non-committed fielders is of intrerest.

What I'll try and do is keep a running total of what everyone reports and see if there's a pattern.

Nice one Kiran, I've been asking around at my club and the 1st team Wrist Spinner - Dave Bonnet took four at the weekend.

1 x clean bowled
2 x catches
1 x LBW

Apparently he's the leading wicket taker in the League at the minute which is good news for would be wrist spinners as he's an example of the potential for Wrist Spinners to be match winners. So that now puts the running total at.

3 x clean bowled
5 x catches
1 x LBW
0 x Stumpings
 
Can't give you exact numbers as I haven't kept a record, and I'm hardly bowling this season (back injury combined with playing mostly 1st XI cricket as a specialist fielder and not bowling).

But from rough memory, I think this year I've had something like...

4 LBW
3 clean bowled
4 caught at deep square leg
2 caught inside the circle
1 caught and bowled

That is very much from memory though, and I think I've taken more wickets than that. I've had at least 5 catches dropped, and as many (if not more) plum LBW appeals turned down. That will always be an issue in club cricket, I'll bet % of caught or LBW wickets is lower than the pro's just based on bad fielding and biassed umpiring :D

Even without your five catches that were put down, catches are racing ahead, which is what I expected. That aside I wondered why you were a bit quiet this year JIm. I must admit with my knee I'm finding it hard to keep coming on here and coming up with content, but all the time there's a few people chipping in I'll be here. I'm still learning - so there's definitely a benefit to keeping the forum going.
 
I'm working all the time and just really busy, thats mostly why I haven't been on. But at the same time I am hardly bowling compared to previously. Most of our mid-week T20 games got cancelled due to insufficient numbers and weather, I hardly play Sundays, and Saturdays I don't bowl. Last time I bowled I'd been out all night and hadn't slept and bowled 2 horrific overs before taking myself off haha. Good job it was a Sunday.

Have cemented myself as possibly the best fielder in the 1st XI now so I get games for that alone even though I don't bat or bowl. At some point in time spin will be required and I might get a go. Only problem is that one of the quicks is also a very good leggie so he bowled 10 overs of leg spin at the weekend on a nice wicket for it because it wasn't doing much for pace bowlers, and I didn't get a shout. I could have done a useful job on that wicket but I'm not hugely fussed as my back still hurts at times. It isn't from bowling, its just from general movement really, I get it fielding as well, in fact more so from picking the ball up.

I'm having a fairly average season as well

22 wickets
6 Bowled, 13 caught( about 40-50% at slip), 2 LBW, 1 stumped

according to last season league stats online last year i got
2 Bowled, 14 caught, 1 LBW, 6 stumped, 1 hit wicket( now that was a funny one)

this season would be alot better if the team could catch and/or I had a decent keeper, 24 catches dropped or certain stumpings dropped/fumbled

Increasingly it looks as I expected that majority of the wickets for Wrist Spinners are catches. The reason I'm looking into this is that it's interesting from the point of view of younger lads that decide to bowl leg-spin 9-13 age group. A kid that I look out for plays for the district side and he bowled Leg Spin in his last match and at the end of the game the district coaches had a word with his Dad asking who coaches him and whether he was being coached? His Dad said that it was me and that I did very little other than encouarge him and ocassionally get him to do the stand start drill if he loses his way, just to get him back on track again. They were more than happy with that, reiterating that if (as he is) he's getting the ball to turn off the wicket, then no-one should interfere with his action and try and over-coach him or start to get him to bowl variations. But the interesting thing for me was that they mentioned that in this game he hadn't taken any wickets and that it wasn't a problem. They then went on to say they wouldn't be bothered if he was expensive in the games, the important thing was that he was there bowling wrist spin and learning his craft and going about it with an obvious enthusiasm for it. They were pleased about this aspect of his bowling saying that he needs to be aware that he is going to be hit out of the park in some matches and that when that happens he can't let it bother him and that he must not put him off, they then pointed out that will he was in his current age group U11's it was going to be possible that wickets might be few and far between and that he's going to witness a lot of missed chances all the time his team mates are learning to field and hold on to catches. They then said as he gets older and his mates around him become stronger, faster, more committed and competitive his wicket tally will start to take off as they take more and more catches off his bowling. The inference seemed to be that at this stage in his bowling development, along with many other boys that take up wrist spinning, it's going to be easy to look around at your mates who bowl seam up dibbly dobbly stuff and take a lot more wickets than you do and think 'This wrist spinning lark is a mugs game' and then go over to the dark side taking the easy option.

I then wondered how many wickets are taken as catches when you're a wrist spinner, hence the request for the data, so cheers and keep it coming.
 
my last 5 were 3x caught, 1x bowled, 1x lbw - with approx 5 dropped catches (very takeable) and 3 missed stumpings. I think at low club level the major problem for a leggie is the keeping - they're simply not used to the deliveries that spin viciously and produce alot of pace off the wicket, the stumping chances and edges come ALOT faster than your average dibbly dobbly pie chucker.

Last summer at the end of the year I found a bit of form and our keeper albeit a 14 year old put down a few which looked as though they should have been taken. You can't get miffed about it too much though - being a Sunday team, this is where these kids find their feet and learn their stuff, but taking the wickets also means the difference between me getting to bowl three overs and 5 overs, the same batsman then quite often rides his luck and then starts coming after you quite often.

22.5-0-154-9 Avg -17.11, Econ- 6.84, S/R 15.22
Of the dismissals I have are 3 stumpings, 1 hitwicket, 1 caught at slip, 1 Caught at deep square leg, 1 short midwicket, 1 caught keeper, 1 caught sweeper extra cover

Impossible for me to get a bowled as ball bounces too high on the matting/concrete pitches
