Your Picks for the New County Season

Seeing as we're coming up to the start of the county season, it's that time when a lot of places start to produce their 'ones to watch' columns.

I'm looking for some nominations from you lot so we can boil it down to the top 5 and see how they go over the season (and also see who the top talent spotter is amongst us!).

All you need to do is post a few players in this thread and we'll take it from there. Let's try to keep it to players under 25 years old but I'll allow a few older players, if you give me a reason :p.

My picks (for now):

Chris Jordan (Surrey)
Steven Finn (Middlesex)
James Hildreth (Somerset)

Ok, that's a few from me, so over to you!

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

James Harris- Amazingly talented and young all-rounder, has a big future
Adil Rashid- England's first real wrist spinning prospect for a long time, looks a real talent, could pip Monty to the spinner spot if he continues to develop well.
Joe Denly- Has to be in for an England call-up soon, he's amazingly talented and has been recieving rave reviews.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

i was going to pick James Harris - looks a good one for the future and i think he will help glamorgan to have a good season

to go with rashid, how about Liam Dawson and Tom Westley? some more spinners to add to the mix

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

David Hussey at Northamshire (or whatever the team I go for is) will have another awesome year.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

Already been beaten to the punch twice regarding James Harris, but will echo it again for the hell of it.
Will be interesting to see how a certain Simon Jones does this season as well...

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

I reckon we'll see Michael Carberry pushing on for another 1000+ season.

Michael Munday at Somerset, good legspinner, and should get more options now that Cameron white has told them to poke it.

Ryan Ten Doeschate at Essex, a big hitting all-rounder, who's a very tidy one-day bowler.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

There's a guy called Pat Legge at Devizes CC. he will be fantastic this season. Bowls med-pace & leg-spin. Bats anywhere from 1-6 and fields like Jonty Rhodes.

What a great site this is.....

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

Johann Louw, back again with Northants, should be a 50 wicket plus seamer this year. Ryan TD at Essex, has also matured with the bat and has been on fire with the Netherlands team this winter.

A complete outsider, and someone not even played a FC match for their county yet - Alexei Kervezee at Worcs.

If he gets a chance at Essex watch out for Maurice Chambers with the ball.

Finally, Stuart Meaker at Surrey is the quickest teenager i have ever seen. He can bowl some SERIOUS gas. Whether he plays or not I have no idea and what his control is like is not the issue. At 18 though, he has a year left with Under 19s cricket and will blow batsmen away if he encouraged.

Meaker sounds interesting, would you say that he is 90mph?

He's been clocked on Hawkeye at Loughborough at 96mph, which is the fastest EVER recorded speed (faster than Simon Jones indoors) and Hawkeye downgrades the speed so this kid has the potential to go over 100mph at some stage.

Watch him...he's still a kid.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

Have heard a few murmurings about Meaker but only that he was quick for his age. If he is able to touch those speeds and can remain injury free, he will be one to watch for the future.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

This Meaker guys sounds awesome.

In terms of picks, people have already said Harris so my list is:
Denly (Kent)
Carberry (Hants)
Edwards (Somerset)
Finn (Middlesex)

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

Also.....Mark Nelson 21, at Northants left hand middle order bat, right arm quick. Really nice prospect.

Then Bud Bailey, 18 at Northants. 6 feet 7 inch right arm fast medium. If he's injury free he could break into the side this year.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

on a side note- a friend of mine played against meaker the other day for loughborough v surrey at the oval- meaker got him lbw after he made 93. Il ask him what he thought and il post it.

Yes, it will be interesting to see if Meaker is anywhere near a good speed in early April on a slow pitch.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

I've heard that Kevin Shine has been tinkering with Meakers action, so it would interesting to see what effect that has, had.

Also, swinger, I don't think that Ponty meant that you were dissing him, more that if he was able to work up a good pace on an April wicket, imagine what he could be like on a fast, bouncy one.

Re: Your Picks for the New County Season

I'm looking for Liam Plunkett to fill the breach of Gibson this season.
