The BaggyGreens Thread

Word is the SCG will be flat again and likely turn. I dont like my home ground being a batting and spin friendly track every bloody year!

But having an attacking middle order bat that bowls decent left arm offies is an amazing thing to have in your team.
We already have one of those, Travis Head, both finger spinners. This tour will give Cooper a rare chance to soak up what it feels like to be part of the world class Australian cricket team. He will be a drink waiter and loving it. Prob be also asked to pack the guys 'coffins' and other menial tasks. All the rookies have to do it. I recall a young Ricky Ponting playing that role back in the West Indies in '95. He said he "was stoked'' to be on his first tour. The next year at home he made 96 on debut if memory serves.

It’s just that Connolly bowls left arm. Travis is great but given it’s looking like Murphy is taking over from Lyon, it would be GREAT if we had a part time or even allrounder orthodox bowler.

Like I have been saying forever, Australian cricket needs a genuine slow bowling all rounder, preferably batting in the top six. Is Connolly that man, time will tell. Murphy started in juniors as a batting all rounder I understand. Perhaps he is the one. Young Tassie rookie offie Raf MacMillan looks to have all round skill.

In my opinion a good spin bowling allrounder would be more useful to us than a fast bowling allrounder. Would allow us to play 4 specialist seamers on our home tracks.
Spin bowling all rounders, or even good part timers are so valuable - I'm a big fan of Heads bowling, he's a pretty complete spinner for a part timer, but he'd be even better if left handed. I'd be disappointed to see Australia become a venue where you can routinely go without a specialist spinner, though - it's never been that historically

In the modern era CA has always used off spin as its Test preference. Yardley, Mallet, May, Lyon. Warne being a great and once off was the only exception. So I cant see them changing with our next. Question is who? Murphy has the front running, but my money is on Rocky or my bolter, little known Tasssie rookie Raf MacMillan.

Aussie A squad v Lions:
Goodwin
Patterson
Ward
Philippe
Hardie
Edwards (c)
Sutherland
Rocchiccioli
Bartlett
Doggett
O'Neill

Buckingham

Far too bowler/ all round heavy. No Hunt, does CA now have him as Ussies replacement. Edwards (c) and a top order bat, get off the grass. Top three all lefties too. Dumb selection.

I do really rate Tim Ward, he’s also our youngest and arguably best left hand opening option right now.
Tim has now matured. Took a poor 23/24 to do it. In his 3 FC games this season he has scores of 96, 94, 142, today 74 and counting. not sure if this game is classed as FC.

Infamously poor at converting 50s into 100s. But honestly if our opener can make a 90 every game that’s perfectly fine by me .

Seems to hopefully have broken through with his 142.

Lets hope that is now past tense. I believe CA had put Ward on notice that they wanted more conversions from him. I get the shivers when he reaches the 70/80s as he seems to become becalmed. He lacks the iron clad temperament of Henry Hunt, the other guy contending for Ussies spot. Think Tim'd fit in nicely at #3 or #4.

I’m not fond of someone that struggles to convert to 100s at 3/4. Also we have Marnus/McSweeney and Green there who are generally just better.

Also noticing from this CA XI match he seems to be really good at rotating strike, he’s going at a SR of 47 but the only boundary he’s hit for 27 overs was a single outside edge.
