1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

The second test after the World Cup starts with Bangladesh taking on India at Chittagong. Although the one-day series was won by India, Bangladesh put up more than a fight and made sure that India would have to work for their victories. Perhaps this is the turning point for Bangladesh cricket? Who knows. But this test will go a long way to stating whereabouts they are in the test arena.

Bangladesh made the Super Eights stage in the World Cup and they would be gunning to prove they have also better in the test arena. Bangladesh are going to go in with a settled line-up, a team that has more certainty than India's. India are still undecided about what they will do. They only have one specialist opening batsmen at the moment, that being Wasim Jaffer and captain Ruhul Dravid has been toying with the possibility of playing five bowlers in the match with conditions expected to be energy sapping. And even then, some of the bowlers and batsmen for the Indians won't be guaranteed a spot with only Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble the certanties for the Indian bowling line-up.

Bangladesh are may only play two pace bowlers and in that scenario Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain will be expected to open the bowling. Should that happen, Syed Rasel should consider himself unlucky after a good World Cup campaign. However, either one of Saqibul Hasan and Mehrab Hossain Jnr will make their debuts today after helping Bangladesh make the Super Eight stage of the recent World Cup.

This match all depends on the will of the Bangladesh batsmen, if they can stay at the crease for as long as they can, then their chances of winning the match will continue to rise. After a horrible World Cup performance, India will be very keen to get off to a good start in the test arena. Expect a good match from these two.

India XV: Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid*, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni+, Ramesh Powar, Anil Kumble, Rajesh Pawar, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, VRV Singh, RP Singh (4 to be omitted)

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

The weather looks promising...

I agree it should be a test for how the Tigers are placed currently but not the be all and end all as anything can happen in the test arena.
Hopefully Nafees finds a bit of form as he contributed only about 28 points to my WC dream team.

Can the Bangals be a powerful test team in the future with 3 left arm spinners as their key weapons?

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

India won the toss and will bat first.
Let's hope the Bangladeshi bowlers can pick up more wickets than the West Indians did earlier.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Jaffer and Karthik to open for India.
No excuses here, as this is supposed to be a really high-scoring pitch.

India Jaffer, Karthik, Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dhoni, Powar, Zaheer Khan, Kumble, RP Singh, VRV Singh

Bangladesh Omar, Nafees, Habibul, Saqibul, Ashraful, Mashud, Mortaza, Rafique, Enamul Haque Jr, Hossain, Rajin Saleh

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

MORTAZA!!!!!!!!!!

Bowled him!
Mashrafe Mortaza gets Jaffer for a first ball duck!!

India 0-1 after 0.1 overs!

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

it's been a bit hectic since Jaffer was dismissed by a first ball Jaffa.

55/1 off 9 Overs, travelling at 6 runs an over.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

67-1 after 11 overs

Shahadat Hossain looked pretty darn good for a while there.
Other than that, the runs have been coming as predicted.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Dravid and Karthik both out, but Ganguly and Tendulkar have put together a 163 run partnership so far.

It's 295-3 at stumps on day 1, a fine score for India after just 77 overs, though there's still a long way to go in this match.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

No such luck.
Looks like it's going to be a few hours before they can start play today.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Latest word from cricinfo is that play probably won't start for at least another three hours!

Even if they do play later today, they won't get more than 20-30 overs in.
India will likely still be batting to start Day 3, and this test is heading for a draw.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Only 20 overs were possible on day 2.
Tendulkar and Ganguly both reached their centuries, and then were out immediately thereafter, for scores of 101 and 100 respectively.

India were 89-3 from the 20 overs.

The current score is 384-6 from 97 overs.

Dhoni is still in there, so India will surely bat some more on Day 3.
Unless the nature of the pitch changes, or the Bangladesh batsmen completely fall apart, this test is quickly marching towards a draw.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Not sure yet, but early word is that the weather will play a big part today for Day 3 too.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

...it's raining again

sounds like a good song!

no play on Day 3 so far, a bit of a wet outfield to contend with

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Day 3 abandoned.

At this point a draw looks highly likely.

The bad news is that there's so much water at the ground right now that play on Day 4 might already be in danger, regardless of how much more it rains between now and then.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

What's this?
They're actually going to play today?!?!?!

A shocking development!

Let's see if India declares quickly. Or immediately.

They're at 384-6 right now.
If they seriously hope to pick up 20 Bangladesh wickets, they'll need to start real soon. If they spend any more time batting, they won't have time to pick up the wickets.

On the other hand, I suppose since Dhoni is still in there, maybe he'll promise to try for a 6 in every over. If they can try to score 60 or 80 runs in half an hour, it might be worth the time to bat some more now.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Kumble was supposed to be Dhoni's partner, but apparently he's still back at the hotel, feeling sick.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Zaheer out for a duck!!!

That's the 3rd wicket for Shahadat Hossain.

Bangladesh may bowl India out here. No declaration will be necessary.

Re: 1st Test: Bangladesh vs India at Chittagong

Unbelievable!!!

Mortaza gets Dhoni and India declares immediately!!

Time for Bangladesh to bat!

It's 387-8 (but with Kumble not here today, it was about to be the last two bowlers in to bat)
