1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

This is the first test match to take place after the World Cup and in what you could say is an entirely different scenario for both sides. Both teams have new coaches and new captains and will be looking to make fresh starts after coming out of different eras so to speak.

For the first time in a long time, West Indies will be without their master player, Brian Lara. Lara's retirement was a shock to most with many believing he'd play on in England for the English summer. But it wasn't to be and now West Indies cricket faces an interesting time as they try to rebuild without Lara being a part of the team.

England too face a new period after the departure of Duncan Flecther as coach of the side. New coach Peter Moores faces many challenges ahead, one of them being to try and rebuild this England line-up after their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Australia in the most recent Ashes series.

The pitch promises to be an absolute beauty with both teams wanting to bowl first to make use of the bowler-friendly conditions. Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard would be bursting at the seams to have first crack on such an inducive pitch.

England are also expected to rest Andrew Flintoff who has an ankle complaint. Both sides have some relatively new members to both teams. Owais Shah comes back from the wilderness to possibly play his first test in a long time. Shah made 88 in his last test but was dropped and hasn't played one since. Matt Prior also comes into the team to keep wicket with Prior being preferred over Chris Read and Geraint Jones.

West Indies also welcome back batsmen Runako Morton who comes into the side to replace noneother than Brian Lara. Morton is expected to bat at number 6.

Two new scenarios, two teams rebuilding. Expect to see a good game here. Both teams will be keen to get off to a good start and keep their critics at bay.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Was listening to the BBC about an hour ago, and they said it was raining at Lords.
According to cricinfo, the rain has stopped and the covers are off.

The toss should be coming up in about 3 hours.

I'm excited to be getting test match cricket again!

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Only one change to the line-ups and that is for England with Monty Panesar replacing James Anderson in the eleven. Owais Shah moves up to number three with Ian Bell dropping to six.

West Indies have won the toss and have unsurprisingly decided to bowl first.

The rain has almost stopped falling at the ground and some of the West Indian players are on the field. Play may start in 10 minutes.

England: 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Liam Plunkett, 9 Steve Harmison, 10 Matthew Hoggard, 11 Monty Panesar.

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Daren Ganga, 3 Devon Smith, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan (capt), 5 Shiv Chanderpaul, 6 Runako Morton, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Dinesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Daren Powell, 10 Corey Collymore, 11 Jerome Taylor.

Currently listening to the game.

West Indies will struggle to take a wicket today, why they would bowl on this pitch i'll never know.

But here they are bowling.

England are 73/0 off 18 overs.

good partnership being built. good start to the series in England.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

85/0 at Lunch on Day One

Strauss 31*
Cook 47*

West Indies never looked like taking a wicket in this first session, looking very under-done and slow.

Still got a long time left in the game though.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Strauss out for 33

England 88-1 after 25

And now it's time for Owais Shah

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Shah gone for 6.

Powell has picked up his second wicket, he's been the star bowler in the early part of the day with 2/24 in 12 overs.

England 104-2 after 29.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Powell has gotten a bit more expensive in his last few overs.
I think it's time to give him a break.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Okay, Powell has looked just fine after the drinks break, giving up only 1 run from 2 overs. He's obviously still got quite a bit left to contribute.

151-2 after 39

with that maiden over, Pietersen's strike rate finally drops below a run a ball.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

The light has improved and they just interviewed Rudi Koertzen and he said they'd be playing again within 5 minutes.

It's about time!

It'll be 158-2 after 43 when they come back out.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Well, at least that was a short break for light.
Play is resuming right now.

We're up to 48.2 overs right now, before that last stoppage.
I'd be happy if they reached 60 overs today.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Cook gets his century, and England cross 200.

200-3 after 55
Cook 102*, Collingwood 21*

No doubt about the star of the day so far.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

200-3 after 56 overs, that's the end of the day

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

it's England, light will always affect play

I said the Windies will struggle to take a wicket today, they were horrible. Looking very much like a club side at times.

Unfortunately for the Windies most of their warm-up games ended up rained off or at least fragmented. They have not really had much preparation so if they even come close to England in this test it's more a reflection of how bad Eng have become rather than how bad Windies are post Lara.

Re: 1st Test: England vs West Indies at Lord's

Lunch, 280-4 after 84

Cook was out for 105, and the West Indies could have picked up a few more wickets too, but they lost out on an lbw decision and dropped some catches. Their bowling wasn't half bad though, so perhaps they'll be able to capitalize in the second session.
