1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Time for some real cricket again.
South Africa won the toss and are batting.

Interesting team news is that Yousuf is not playing.

South Africa: HH Gibbs, GC Smith, HM Amla, JH Kallis, AB de Villiers, AG Prince, MV Boucher, A Nel, M Ntini, PL Harris, DW Steyn

Pakistan: Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Faisal Iqbal, Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal, Abdur Rehman, Umar Gul, Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Asif

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Gibbs and Smith 35-0 after 10 overs.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

0/80 in the 22nd over. Solid start by South Africa. Pakistan's inexperienced bowling attack is being found out at the moment. They're already into their sixth bowler of the day, all this before the lunch break.

Smith is 40 not out, Gibbs 36 not out.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Smith was out for 42.
South Africa reached 96-1 at lunch.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Gibbs fell a short time after lunch but it has been all South Africa from there. Gibbs made 54 and was out to Umar Gul.

South Africa are 2/241 now. Kallis is 87 not out while Amla is 52.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

JH Kallis is now on 104*(159) and is clearly on top of Hafeez, Gull and Co.

Any conditions on the pitch. It sounds like a flat dry pitch, can anyone confirm or deny?

Yeah, pitch is fairly dry but has a small amount of grass cover. There is a lot of grass at each crease though.

Mohammad Asif takes the wicket of Hashim Amla for 81.

3/279 with just over 8 overs remaining in the day.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

South Africa reach 3/294 at stumps on Day 1.

Jacques Kallis batted very well for 118 not out after giving two chances and Ashwell Prince is not out on 3.

Good day for the South Africans, they will be pleased with that effort. Day 2 shapes to be a good one, the Pakistan attack needs to come up with the goods here otherwsie they could be chasing a lot when it is there turn to bat.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

It looks like South Africa is going to put up a pretty formidable score tomorrow for Pakistan to aim for. I think Kallis holds the record for most centuries without getting a double century, so maybe he'll finally be able to rectify that situation.

Piss Off Timmy.

If you don't enjoy it, Then dont' post here.

The bowlers need to do a better job tommorow, Almost goes without saying.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Solid partnership from Kallis and Prince.

They've reached 340-3 after the first hour today.
Kallis up to 148.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

all out for 450

Kallis dismissed for 155
De Villiers 77

Abdur Rehman on his debut taking 4/105 off 31 overs

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Pakistan 5/127 at stumps on Day 2.

Kamran Akmal has top score with 42 and Mohammad Hafeez made 34. Pakistan had a fast start early in theri innings, racing to 0/71 early but since then they've collapsed, losing 5/56. Salman Butt is in hospital too, he may not bat tomorrow which means Pakistan could struggle to avoid following-on.

Paul Harris has the best bowling figures for the Proteas with 2/18. Steyn, Nel and Kallis have one wicket each.

Day 3 promises to be good. Pakistan will be eager to avoid following on and getting back into the game. That will be tough from here I can tell you.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Rehman fell in the first hour. But the good news for Pakistan is that Salman Butt has come back and is looking good.

Pakistan is 176-6 at drinks, they still need 75 runs to avoid the follow-on, but they should be able to get there fairly easily with Salman Butt back.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Pakistan 219-6 at lunch. Good partnership from Shoaib Malik and Salman Butt. They've just about taken care of any worries about following on.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

6/232 now. Moving along at just above three runs an over.

Shoaib Malik is 69 not out and Salman Butt is 24.

Barring a major collapse, Pakistan should avoid the follow on but they still have a lot of work to do to catch up to the South African total.

South Africa just need one breakthrough and they will be into the tail.

EDIT: BigCricket jinx strikes again, Salman Butt is LBW to Harris without adding to his 24. 7/233.

Anyone that likes baseball and says that cricket is boring is an imbecile, baseball is the dullest spectator sport in world only after Croquet, Curling and equal with American Football. Next you'll be saying that you want cricketers to wear tight pants and tucked in shirts like baseball as you like to get a good look at the players' butts.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

Very interesting days play.

Pakistan were bowled out for 291, 159 runs short of South Africa's first innings. Shoaib Malik was the 8th wicket to fall, he made 74, Umar Gul followed six overs later and then a fighting innings from Danish Kaneria (26*) saw Pakistan lift to their eventual score.

Paul Harris took 5/73 with Dale Steyn and Andre Nel taking two wickets each.

In reply, South Africa collapsed to 3/43 but Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince ensured no more wickets fell. South Africa are 3/76 an overall lead of 235.

South Africa are in control here but Pakistan are not without a chance and Day 4 proves to be an exciting days cricket.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan v South Africa

5/171 at lunch on Day 4. That's a lead of 330 runs.

Ashwell Prince scored 45 but was then bowled by Danish Kaneria and AB de Villiers suffered the same fate against Abdur Rehamn exactly one over later. Jacques Kallis is still there though, playing a patient innings and is 57 not out and he has Mark Boucher for company.

Rehman has 3/67 and Kaneria 2/51. They are the only wicket-takers for Pakistan so far in this innings.

Pakistan need some quick wickets here, they can't afford to let Kallis and Boucher score too many runs otherwise this game will be out of reach. Rehman has looked pretty good and that is a definite bright spot. He has seven wickets so far and remember he is on debut, can he get a ten-wicket match?
