The BBL is back for 2022/23 with the first game of the tournament getting underway today. Sydney Thunder played host to Melbourne Stars at Manuka Oval in Canberra with the match being a very tight, low scoring affair, characterised by some pretty ordinary batting but some exceptional bowling and fielding.

The Stars batted first and scraped to 8/122 with the match appearing to be formality with that score well under par. But, the Stars struck early with two wickets in the first over from Trent Boult and helped by some poor batting from the Thunder to keep themselves in the contest. The Thunder needed eight from the last over with three wickets in hand but two quick wickets reduced the equation to seven from three balls with one wicket remaining.

Gurinder Sandhu hit a six off the next ball to tie the scores before defending the next ball with one run needed from the final delivery. The next ball was a length delivery from Beau Webster which Sandhu missed but wicketkeeper Joe Clarke also missed the ball as it went the boundary for four byes as the Thunder got home with one wicket to spare.

Tomorrow sees Adelaide Strikers take on Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval at 18:45 local time (8:15 UTC).

End of the Thunder v Stars game wasn't the highest playing standard at times but the finish was a cracker.

Forgot who it was but a brilliant catch was also taken in the last over.

The batting was poor but the bowling and fielding aside from the keeping effort off the last ball of the game was of a very good standard I thought. The low scoring games are sometimes the best ones.

Tonight saw Adelaide Strikers take on Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval. The Strikes batted first and scored an imposing 6/184 from their 20 overs, Matt Short hit 84 for the Strikers, Adam Hose made 40 off 22 balls while Chris Lynn made 41 for his new club after leaving the Heat.

The Sixers never really got going in reply, making 7/133 from 20 overs, Jordan Silk made 36 from 25 balls in the middle order but no-one else in the line-up was able to score much better than a run a ball in the chase which saw the Strikers claim a big 51 run win.

Tomorrow night see Brisbane Heat host Melbourne Renegades at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns at 18:15 local time (8:15 UTC).

Brisbane Heat hosted Melbourne Renegades tonight up at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. The Renegades bated first and were good in spurts, namely the early overs of the innings and for a period midway through. Nic Maddinson made 87 from 49 balls to drive the Renegades while Andre Russell scored 35 from 28 balls to also give the Renegades some lift. In the end, the Renegades finished on 7/166, some way short of what they would have liked. Matt Kuhnemann was the best of the Heat's bowlers with 3/32 off four overs while James Bazley bowled well to claim2/19 from four overs as well.

in reply, the Heat started badl;y losing Max Bryant in the first over for a duck before the Heat slipped to 3/34 after the dismissal of Sam Billings. Colin Munro and Jimmy Pierson got things going for the Heat but Munro's runout for 35 hurt the Heat and when Pierson fell not long after, the Heat's chances of winning took a massive blow. Some late hitting from Ross Whiteley with 28 runs from 18 balls added some respectability to the scoreboard but the Heat finished on 6/144 from their 20 overs. Akeal Hossein was the Renegades' best with the West Indies' player claiming a tidy 3/15 from four overs.

Tomorrow is the first double header of the season with Melbourne Stars hosting Hobart Hurricanes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 17:05 local time (6:05 UTC) before Sydney Thunder take on Adelaide Strikers at Sydney Showground Stadium at 20:15 local time (9:15 UTC).
