WA were bowled out for 386 on day two, having lost 4/17 early on the second day and when Aaron Hardie was dismissed for 13, that left WA at 8/322. A small partnership of 22 eventuated between Joel Paris and Corey Rocchiccioli before Paris edged to first slip off Scott Boland for 16. However, Rocchiccioli, who had just one first class run coming into this game went ballistic, smashing 50 from 29 balls to lift WA to 386 in a 42 run 10th wicket partnership with Lance Morris. Rocchiccioli's half century was the highest score by a number 10 in a Shield final as well.

Victoria started well thanks to Travis Dean and Will Pucovski before Dean was caught at short leg by Teague Wyllie off Aaron Hardie for 28 and Will Pucovski followed soon after for 59. Late in the day, Matt Short edged Hardie to Cameron Bancroft at second slip for 10 before Peter Handscomb and nightwatchman Mitchell Perry saw Victoria through to stumps at 3/147.

The match is pretty evenly poised at this stage with the 100 over bonus points to come into play on day three so tomorrow will be an interesting day.

The forecast for tomorrow is good with only a slight chance of a shower in the afternoon and evening so we should see a full day's play again. Sunday is showers with a possible storm at this stage with rain appearing highly likely.
 
Boy did I underestimate the Vic response after a lacklustre first day. Their quicks came our firing, creating a Warriors collapse on what looked like a more spicey surface under leaden skies. I have been critical of Will Sutherland but yesterday he may have come of age as a first class bowler. He had all the batsmen uncomfortable with his pace and extra bounce.

State of play start of Day 3. With runs on the board and a substantial lead Warriors still with the upper hand. Removing the classy Will Pucovski was a major win for the bowlers and with a pitch playing some tricks it wont be easy for the remaining Vic batsmen. For mine skipper and leading run scorer Pete Handscomb is the key to the Vics getting close to the WA score.

Victoria resumed at 3/147 on day three and almost managed to make it through the first session without loss before Peter Handscomb was out caught behind for 80 with only a few minutes to go until lunch to leave Victoria at 4/233. Nic Maddinson blasted 20 runs chasing the bonus points target with all his scoring shots as boundaries before nicking to Shaun Marsh off Joel Paris for 20 before Jonathan Merlo was also out caught behind to leave the Vics at 6/278. WA secured the lead on bonus points with the innings coming to a close as Victoria were bowled out for 306 as WA secured an 80 run lead on first innings. Aaron Hardie claimed 3/54 and Joel Paris 3/95 to lead the WA bowling attack while Corey Rocchiccioli cleaned up the tail to snare 2/24.

WA didn't start their first innings well as Cameron Bancroft edged to first slip in the opening over for a duck while Shaun Marsh was dismissed for the second time by Matt Short in the game, caught at first slip for 13. Hilton Cartwright then followed for 12 before Sam Whiteman and Teague Wyllie managed to get WA to stumps at 3/91, leading by 171 runs.

WA lead the game on bonus points which means they only need to draw the game to win the match. There is however still two days to go and the forecast for tomorrow has been scaled back to a shower or two with 1-6mm predicted and a maximum of 29 degrees. I'd expect to get a good portion of the day's play in with the showers expected mostly in the afternoon while Monday's forecast is for cloudy conditions with only a slight (20%) chance of a shower and 27 degrees predicted.

Play tomorrow is at 10am which is midday AEST for the eastern seaboard in Australia with daylight saving now finished. Play commences at 2am UTC for those outside Australia.
 
Hardie again the pick of the Warrior attack. The ball of the match for mine was his late outswinger to deny the Vic skipper another century.

3-91.. a 171 run lead at the start of Day 4 has the Warriors still with its nose in front. Much will depend on the two at the crease the patient and consistent Sam Whiteman and the talented teenager Teague Wyllie. I expect the WACA brains trust will be looking at nothing short of 350 target to set the Vics.

Yeh with AEST d/s finishing play will start an hour earlier in Perth. You beautie.

BOM saying an 80% chance of rain in Perth today. Be a shame if weather was to ruin what is turning out to be a thrilling contest.

Loving this match to date.. so many twists and turns.

Barrel is so annoyingly accurate. Gives you so little.

A vital partnership between Whiteman (104) and Hardie (55) now has WA in the box seat to win its first title since 1999. At tea WA is 297 ahead with 5 still in the sheds. Remember a draw wont do for the Vics. I say WA will bat for at least another hour plus to try to lift the lead to 400, an unassailable position then perhaps put in the Vics for a tricky period before stumps.

Sam Whiteman surely must be putting up his name for one of the Test opening spots when Warner and Khawaja call it quits. He has had two fabulous seasons on the trot after a solid career both as keeper/batsman and opener.

Hardie put his hand up when Whiteman needed someone to stick around with him. The all rounder has just posted his second maximum in only 9 FC matches to put the WARRIORS in an unassailable position to win its second title since '99.

Warriors take their lead to 393 at stumps. Will they declare overnite or bat on for a while tomorrow.

WA started the day at 3/110 and were very slow early on, scoring three runs from the opening nine overs of the day. Victoria got themselves right into the contest with Teague Wyllie edging behind for 23 off Mitch Perry while Josh Philippe was caught at cover off the bowling of Jon Holland for just one run to leave WA at 5/110.

However, that brought Aaron Hardie to the crease with Sam Whiteman as the pair put on a partnership of 174 runs which included both Whiteman and Hardie bringing up their centuries to boost WA's lead, Whiteman was eventually bowled for 123 from 338 balls in an innings with lasted 501 minutes. Hardie remains 119 not out at stumps alongside Joel Paris who has 11 with WA 6/313 at the close, a lead of 393.

Scott Boland has toiled hard for Victoria with 2/29 from 21 overs while Perry, Holland, Will Sutherland and Matthew Short have one wicket each.

No rain today which was good as the bureau again downgraded the forecast with most of the showers in the hills although there is a chance of showers and a storm overnight. Tomorrow is forecast to be cloudy with a slight chance of a shower so the day should be good enough for a full day's play.

It has been a good game. It was certainly in the balance just before and at lunch today but Whiteman and Hardie were brilliant, both have certainly enhanced their reputations in this game and also in the other game against Victoria before the final as well.

I would hope Whiteman has put his name into the mix with regards to an opening spot for the national side. Warner and Khawaja are the incumbents at the moment but Whiteman has had a fantastic season, averaging 58.27 this season after 39.64 in 2020/21. I would hope that he has added his name to the list of potentials alongside Bryce Street and Henry Hunt.

Hardie has been excellent too and has the potential to be a good all-rounder. He still has some way to go but he has been excellent in this game and bowled well in the fixture before this as well.

WA will keep batting until they are either all out or will declare if they reach a total which puts the target completely out of reach.

So after four previous enthralling days is the finale set to peeter out into a tame draw. This game deserves better than that. Say what about this scenario.. Warriors reach 400 and bowl again. Vics take the long handle to the attack and get within sniffing distance of the target before the WA quicks stage a comeback to win by say 50 runs. Every WACA punter and couch potato will have gotten his money's worth three times over.
 
The umps have called time. Yes it is a tame draw. Congrats WA.. The clean sweep. They can justifiably be named the champions in all formats for '21/22.

How does Aaron Hardie feel about the umps pulling the plug some 30 runs shy of his first Shield double hundred.
His partner in crime Sam Whiteman just pips him too for final MOM, It've been more fitting to share the honor. White pulled off a mammoth feat in this match.. some 200 runs from over 500 balls.. second innings tons came from 338 balls and he did not offer a solitary chance over his multiple hours at the crase

Now I am having that empty feeling again with the red ball season officially over.

WA started day four on 6/313, leading by 393 runs. Joel Paris fell LBW to Jon Holland for 21 but Aaron Hardie powered on, reaching 150 runs in a partnership with Matthew Kelly which took the game to lunch with WA 7/400. Both the captains and umpires agreed to call the game off early with the prospect of an outright result unlikely which enabled WA to claim the 2021/22 Sheffield Shield due to scoring a higher amount of batting and bowling points over the course of each side's opening 100 overs of their first innings. WA's win was their first Shield title in 23 years and 16th overall.

Sam Whiteman was named Player of the Match for his 85 in the first innings and 123 in the second having faced more than 500 balls in the match while Aaron Hardie finished on 174 not out, his second first-class century and highest score to date at the level. Scott Boland was Victoria's best bowler in the second innings, finishing with 2/35 from 25 overs while off-spinner Jon Holland also claimed two wickets.

Scratching my head over Travis Dean. I can see at least five others ahead of him. Khawaja, Whiteman, Labuchagne, Handscomb, Cartwright.

I wouldn't read too much into it, Dean played only a few games this season yet somehow won the award. He's well down the pecking order in terms of a spot in the Australian side, there'd be at least five or six guys ahead of him with regards to one of the opening batter positions which is where he bats.
