3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

End of Day 2:
West Indies 191-6, still trailing by 113 runs.

It would be nice if they could get that number down to around 50 tomorrow. That should make it a close finish. Anything more than that and they may have a large target to chase down on day 4 or 5 on a tough batting surface.

Ganga is on 77*, and Gul and Kaneria each got 3 wickets. They're the three stars of this innings so far.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Day 3 is underway

Ganga finally out for 81.
West Indies 204-7

They still trail by 100 runs, but it looks like Pakistan will be batting sooner rather than later.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Ganga steered West Indies to 191 for six at close on day two with his defiant and unbeaten knock on a slow, low bouncing pitch which he described as a real challenge for batsmen.

Pacer Umar Gul and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria took six wickets between them but Ganga ensured his team were not rolled over by the home side, who had been bowled out for 304 one hour into the morning session.

After a solid 51-run opening stand between Ganga and Chris Gayle, who stroked his way to 40 from 54 balls, West Indies were rocked by Gul, who took three wickets in 10 balls.

He had Gayle caught at mid-on by Abdul Razzaq and two balls later bowled skipper Brian Lara with a beauty that moved away and took off-stump in his first over after lunch.

Lara failed to get off the mark after scores of 61, 122 and 216 in the previous two tests.

His wicket spurred on the Pakistanis and next over, Gul produced an unplayable, in-dipping yorker to clean up Ramnaresh Sarwan, back in the side after being dropped for the second test, also for a duck.

63-RUN STAND

Ganga, batting resolutely, revived the visitors from a precarious 51 for three with a 63-run stand with Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the fourth wicket, the latter picking the gaps beautifully to score 36 from 49 balls with seven fours.

Chanderpaul fell just before tea, caught smartly at forward short leg by Imran Farhat off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

Kaneria, who took a beating in the first two tests from Lara, was at his best on the slow track and also grabbed the fifth wicket when he ended an obdurate knock of 21 by Runako Morton.

Morton was given out caught at silly point although television replays suggested the ball might have come off fielder Farhat's helmet.

Kaneria took his third wicket just before stumps when he lured Dwayne Bravo (8) into going for a cut and edging to keeper Kamran Akmal.

Ganga, who has batted for 308 minutes and hit nine fours, said he had to be really patient on the pitch which was inconsistent in terms of bounce.

aid the pitch was not sporting as it was very slow and difficult to play shots on.

Earlier, paceman Corey Collymore finished with three for 57 when Pakistan lost their last three wickets for 47 runs, the last-wicket pair of Gul (26) and Kaneria (7) putting on 32 valuable runs.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Great last-wicket stand for West Indies.
Powell and Taylor were out quickly, and at 216-9, it looked like the deficit would be about 80-85 runs. But Collymore did a great job of sticking around and Ramdin finally started swinging with nothing to lose. Ramdin mamaged to get his 4th ever test half-century, but was then run out soon thereafter trying to keep the strike away from Collymore.

West Indies all out for 260,
Pakistan lead by 44 runs after the first innings.

That's a lot closer than it looked like it would be for a while, so I think the West Indies players will feel slightly energized heading into the lunch break. They'll certainly look forward to trying to pick up some quick wickets in the next session.

Anyways, great last wicket stand from Ramdin and Collymore, it kept West Indies hopes of winning this test alive.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Farhat and Hafeez off to a very slow start in Pakistan's second innings here.
They're 24-0 after 15 overs.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Yeesh, what a session.
Pakistan 61-1 at tea.

At least the West Indies picked up a wicket.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Pakistan reached 130 for two after plodding along in the final two sessions having bowled out West Indies for 260 runs at the stroke of lunch for a first-innings lead of 44.

The home side lost Younis Khan, celebrating his 29th birthday, leg before for 20 three overs from the end and Hafeez was joined by Mohammad Yousuf who requires 46 to break West Indian Vivian Richards's record of 1,710 test runs in a calendar year, set in 1976.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Pretty slow stuff from Pakistan, but it seems to be getting the job done.

Pakistan's lead of 174 isn't too far gone yet for the West Indies, but they'll need to pick up a few wickets in the early session tomorrow.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Pakistan and Yousuf are going along just fine here.

Pakistan is up to 160-2, a lead of 204, and Yousuf is up to 22, he only needs another 2 dozen or so runs for the record.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

drinks, Pakistan 176-2

Yousuf is up to 36, he needs only 11 more runs for the all-time record.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Carn Yousef !! Take Pakistan to victory !

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Yousef on 41, How many more does he need ?

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Beaten Zaheer Abbas record for most runs 3 consecutive tests.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

With a 4 - Mohammed Yousef, Makes himself the highest run-order in a calender year ! WELL DONE.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

What an incredible year he's had! A fantastic series too!

Look at his scores in the 3 tests vs West Indies so far:
Test 1- 192, dnb
Test 2- 56, 191
Test 3- 102, 54*

That's top-class, and he's surely one of the absolute best batsmen in the world!

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Dominant session for Pakistan, 111 runs and no wickets lost.
They lead by 285 runs, and may have to think about declaring before the day is up.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Hafeez gets his century, but is finally out due to a great catch from Ramdin. He's out for 104.

Pakistan 284-3, thats a lead of 328.
Yousuf is on 92 and is closing in on yet another century.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Yousuf gets his century, his 9th of the calendar year, yet another record!

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Tea, Pakistan 339-3, a lead of 383 runs.

The question here is when Inzi will declare. Yousuf is on 113 and Inzi is on 31, so there's no need for these two to stick around until they reach some milestone. Inzi might declare right after tea, or he may want the lead to be over 400. We'll see.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

congratulations to Yousuf. Stellar performance by a classy guy......Beautiful strokes that almost match the grace of Lara's ;) and a humble demeanour...the Cricket Gods were surely smiling on him...He makes batting look easy, tremendous effort...

That said,,I still feel a tremendous sadness. Yousuf was superb but we also helped him along. Dropped catches, fumbling fielding and poor quality bowling makes this a very bitter pill to swallow indeed given the importance of Viv's record to us. Half the time I couldn't believe what I was watching..it was just too surreal the many missed opportunities. But Viv is in a class by himself, and nothing can ever change that. Maybe this is divine providence and a sign that West Indians need to move on, stop obsessing about our glory days and work on creating a new cricket legacy that builds upon the foundation laid down for us by our greats.

Anyway it ain't over yet... Will be interesting to see how our batsmen respond to this...
