4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

The final test match of the series and England have an unassailable 2-0 lead. West Indies almost stole the last game off England and if it weren't for some less than impressive second innings bowling they might have got there.

Only one change for the English line-up. A fit Matthew Hoggard makes a welcome return to the side with Liam Plunkett going back to the county circuit.

West Indies are expected to go in unchanged after their fighting performance in the third test. They showed some good signs in the third encounter but they will need to work on their bowling. Darren Sammy, who took 7/66 during England's second innings in the previous test in an under an injury cloud with a groin injury. The strain occured on Monday while Sammy was batting during West Indies' second innings. Losing Sammy would be a big blow to the Windies, he was their best bowler by far in the last test and single handedly put them into a position where they had a chance of winning.

Expect another good match here, England are looking to keep West Indies winless while the Windies will want to restore some pride and win this final test.

England XI: Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan*, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior+, Matthew Hoggard, Ryan Sidebottom, Steve Harmison, Monty Panesar.

West Indies (probable): Chris Gayle, Daren Ganga*, Devon Smith, Runako Morton, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin+, Darren Sammy, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore.

Umpires: Aleem Dar and Billy Bowden
3rd Umpire: Niall Long

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

rain |@

there's supposed to be an inspection about 80 minutes from right now, but the rain has been steady and it'll need to stop a while before they can even think about really drying it out

I think I'll take a 4-hour nap, because I'd be surprised if there's much play before then.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Play has been abandoned for the day. No play was possible on Day 1.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

they should have played this match more south than they are now, perhaps Australia? :p

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Day Two: and this game is still stuck in neutral

delayed by a wet outfield, the weather isn't looking too good, but no rain at the moment.

Inspection at midday (9:00pm EST, 8:30pm CST). Who knows how much play we'll get today

i can't see much happening, but stranger things have happened.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Shocking development here.
The toss will be in 5 minutes!

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

England team
AJ Strauss, AN Cook, MP Vaughan, KP Pietersen, PD Collingwood, IR Bell, MJ Prior, RJ Sidebottom, SJ Harmison, MS Panesar, MJ Hoggard

West Indies team
CH Gayle, D Ganga, DS Smith, S Chanderpaul, RS Morton, DJ Bravo, MN Samuels, D Ramdin, CD Collymore, DBL Powell, FH Edwards

So as expected, Hoggard comes in for Plunkett. West Indies, though, have been forced to make 2 changes due to injury. Samuels comes in for Sammy, and Powell comes in for Taylor. A shame that Sammy has to miss his followup match, after such a promising start.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

By the way, Vaughan won the toss. He decided to bowl, so we'll see Gayle and Ganga out there in a few minutes.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Unbelieveable!
Sidebottom opens the bowling, and Ganga is out for a golden duck, he hit it straight to Cook.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Gayle out for a pretty entertaining 28 from just 24 deliveries.

West Indies 32-2

too bad, because he was fun to watch today

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Bowled him!

Devon Smith lets one go by him, and then looks completely confused when it hits the stumps. That's the second for Sidebottom today. But it may not be his last.

Wrest Indies 34-3

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Out comes the sunlight, and out goes Runako Morton.
He lofts a weak shot from Harmison right towards Sidebottom.

West Indies 55-4 after 17

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Play ends early due to rain and light.
West Indies 132-4 after 40.1 overs.

Once again, it looks like Chanderpaul and Bravo are putting together what could turn out to be a great partnership. They're at 44 and 43 respectively right now. But will they be able to keep it up tomorrow? Or will Bravo fall early again? And will Chanderpaul be left without any help from his teammates as he finishes unbeaten but with no partners?

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Bad start for the Windies but good to see them fight back.
Unfortunate to hear about Sammy, would have liked to see him play again

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

West Indies are 6/211 at lunch.

Bravo was dismissed for 44 and Samuels was out for 19 a short time ago. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has moved to 92 and is really holding this innings together. Dinesh Ramdin is not out on 7.

Ryan Sidebottom has 3/70.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Chanderpaul gets his century. His innings included 14 fours and 176 balls.

Unfortunately, he's only got Corey Collymore left for company. The West Indies batsmen have departed quickly after the lunch break and Chanderpaul has had to carry the team again, just like in the Windies second innings of the third test.

Now 9/238, Chanderpaul is 102 with Collymore on 5 and striking at 125 runs per 100 balls.

Sigh.
249-9, and Chanderpaul is up to 110.
Regardless of whether he's the last guy out or not, he's basically been left all alone once again.

Sidebottom has 5 wickets.

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Collymore hung on! Good on 'im!

Chanderpaul - what a century!

if england can get this last wicket, then make quick runs, then they are still with a chance

Re: 4th Test: England vs West Indies at Chester-le-Street

Collymore finally out lbw.

Great partnership though to get West Indies to 287.
Collymore only scored 13, but the partnership lasted 23.2 overs!
Chanderpaul finished 136 not out.

Frankly, that was 100 minutes that England couldn't spare. I think their chances of winning this test took a dramatic hit with that partnership.
