Re: AFL

There was some AFL on the TV late last night, boy is it rough! Did anyone ever watch the International Rules series between Ireland and Australia? Irish gaelic football players against AFL guys. It just turned into a punch-up after a bit

Re: AFL

It got cancelled because it was too violent last time, but they having a new series over here later in the year. Should be interesting as the only footage I've seen of it has been all the punch ups.

And on the subject of Gaelic Football, the AFL are considering having an Irish team as the 18th team. Something about the Gaelic players getting paid jack all or something

Chris Johnson's clothesline was awesome!

ESSSENNDOONNN 4 IN A ROOWWWW!!!!!

Re: AFL

Jonesy: It was a highlights show, saw the essendon game though.

Jimmy: The issue may have been that the Irish players DON'T GET PAID AT ALL! It's a completely amateur sport. That's kinda why there was a big deal over the fighting in the Int Rules matches - as our guys all have to be able to go to work the following week, and clubs can't afford huge medical bills for players.

AFL looks good though, great bit of pace and they were getting shots in from crazy angles ... much more exciting than soccer at the very least.

Re: AFL

Ah yeh, the Essendon game was great to watch, free flowing and lots of goals scored.

Did ya see the Dean Solomon elbow on Ling?

Have you seen Barry Hall's king it on Brent Staker? The Americans were going crazy over that!

Re: AFL

Saw the Solomon one - broken cheek! Pretty hard hit alright! I assume he'll be getting some form of ban and a fine?

Re: AFL

Shame that they don't get paid. Surely they bring the crowds in?

And Soloman got banned for 8 weeks, so his season is finished. Ling will be out for a month, although he wants to be ready for the Hawthorn match.

They get big crowds alright - but the governing body gets the money from the gate and is responsible for making sure it gets distributed at club level around the country ... supposedly. They make a big deal out of the fact that it's an amateur game and players can only turn out for the county they live in and that it's going to stay that way. The players are starting to make a bit of noise about this though - so I can imagine it becoming semi-pro at some stage and from there who knows.

I wouldn't like to see it becoming like soccer, where the richest teams gets the best players and always win.

Re: AFL

Well they should make it like the AFL system. The West Coast Eagles are the richest team yet they are second last only due to a few dot points of percentage. The draft pick system is a very effective way of balancing out the talent in the competition. Generally players don't change clubs for the higher wage. And if it does turn semi-pro it would attract more players, and probably even more talent. Plus there could be more International Games :D

Re: AFL

Yeh the best players in the competition don't usually go anywhere.

The draft is good for balancing out the talent but the tanking issue arises.

Re: AFL

In my opinion tanking doesn't really exist. If the clubs season is shot then why not blood a whole lot of players? Virtually every club would do it and if it gets them a good draft pick then they will be in a good position in the next season.

Re: AFL

So what what Libba said. He was hardly convincing when he said it. And so what anyway, they lose, they lose.

Re: AFL

oh come on dude, Carlton won how many games in four years? the idea that they were good enough to choose when they were going to win and lose is pretty ridiculous.

Re: AFL

Well first of all, what is it 3 number 1 picks in a row? The first and second years they probably didn't tank but last year I reckon they did. I reckon they tanked. I reckon they put in so many young player that didn't deserve a game, put players in for surgery when they hardly needed it and so on...
