Australia in the West Indies

Re: Australia in the West Indies

He was the record first class scorer but there is a big step up from playing first class cricket and mixing it with the best on the international stage. I hope second innings he comes out and remembers this because it seemed that he thought he was still playing back home for the baggy blue and back here he would of gotten away with those sort of shots

Hussey gone to a blinder and so did Ponting. When teh West Indies want to entertain there is no-one better in world cricket that can do that.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Hodge is out to Edwards for 68, that's Edwards third wicket of the innings. Hodge tries to cut but the ball lifted on him and popped up. Ramdin takes a nice diving catch.

5/326, Mitch Johnson, the nightwatchman is 11. Andrew Symonds is the new batsman.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Chanderpaul is quality, last man out.

In trouble, when was the last time Australia were 4/17 with there top order all gone?

Big ton from one of Mitch, Hodgey, Roy, Haddin or Binga tonight is needed. We'll be struggling if one or two quick ones fall early on.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Australia were bowled out for 167. Only Andrew Symonds made anything of note, scoring 79, almost half of Australia's total. The two Brad's, Hodge and Haddin were the only batters abive double figures with 27 and 23 respectively.

Dwayne Bravo did the damage with the ball taking 4/47 while Fidel Edwards took 3/40 and Daren Powell 3/36.

That set West Indies a target of 287 and they're looking good so far at 1/46, Devon Smith is up to 19 not out, Brenton Parchment is the sole wicket to fall so far for 15 courtesy of Stuart Clark's impeccable accuracy.

An exciting finish looms in this one, I reckon the Windies can get there.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Game in the balance now. Stu Slark struck only a few minutes into day four to get rid of Ramnaresh Sarwan for 12 and then trapped Devon Smith in front for 28 about 15 mins later.

And now Brett Lee gets the wicket of Runako Morton for nine, also LBW. Morton tried to hit Lee for the third four of the over but his adrenaline rush proved to be his downfall and Lee got wicket number one for the innings.

West Indies are 4/75 now, and this wicket becomes huge. Chanderpaul and Bravo are together, they must score some runs to give West Indies some momentum and make a charge for the target score.

208 more runs required for victory.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Ah man, West Indies doing the good old calypso collapso, they slipped to 6/91, Bravo fell to Stuart Clark in a very well wet-up plan. Clark bowled a full length and Bravo hit the ball stright to the man specifically positioned for the catch at a short and stright mid-on.

And in the very next over, Brett Lee took a return catch to dismiss Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 11. Just short of a length from Lee, Chanderpaul wanted to go through the vacant mid-on area but only succeeded in hitting the ball back to Lee.

Only Ramdin and the bowlers left now with 196 still needed. And now Stuey MacGill is going to bowl.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

There's a fight on the Cricinfo commentary about the amount of New South Wales players in the Australian XI. There are currently six of them, Phil Jaques, Simon Katich, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Stuart MacGill. Katich and Jaques have both dropped catches so far although Jaques' was a hard one. They've all been doing good things to earn their place in the side though.

6/97 currently, 190 needed for victory. Darren Sammy is struggling against MacGill here.

I was talking more on the fact that we have to shuffle players in and out for him because he's injury prone these days and can't have a settled team, rather than his form as such.

If a younger guy can play almost all games and be close to Hayden's average, wouldn't that be better?

Carrying on from my point about Hayden- is it getting to the time for him to give it away. He's not any younger, and seems to miss a game or two every recent series through a different injury every time. As much as I like him, maybe its time to go?

The chances of finding a player like that is very slim. Haydos is one of the best openning batsmen of all time and I don't use that term lightly. A bloke who has been opening his batting for his whole career and has an average of 53. WOW. I think we should hold onto him aslong as we possibly can and aslong as he wants to go on with it. Groom the next opening bat in the Pura Milk Cup which happens to be the best First Class competition in the world.

pfft watched katich last night and all he wanted to do was hit every ball for 4clearly a man under pressure for his spot all he was trying to do was look good and make fast runs. he's foot work was shocking e.g. why he nicked this first ball and almost went out for a golden. he'll be dropped next game if he doesnt make runs in the secong dig thats if the second innings in needed which i doubt australia will make 500+. for another opening batsman if hayden is not up and going recon m clarke or hussey or even hodge could do the job.

I haven't watch Katich's innings, but don't get on his case just yet. He did average 94 in the Pura Milk Cup last year, so give him a break. Yes if Hayden is fit to come back, by all means drop Kat. But saying that we should give him some time to get into the Test format.

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Stuart Clark was brilliant in the fourth innings with a 5/32 match winning performance. After claiming three scalps in the first dig, Clark picked up Brendon Parchment (15), Dwayne Bravo (0), Darren Sammy (35), Devon Smith (28), and skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan (12) to take the tourists to victory, skittling the West Indies for 191 in their second innings, 95 short of the required total.

They played the first one day international here fourteen months ago, now the West Indies host Australia in the first Test match at the new home of Antiguan cricket. Matthew Hayden will be hoping for a similar score, but first he'll have to get on the park - that's expected, and with Michael Clarke certain to come back in, Brad Hodge is likely to head to England on the weekend having kept his name up there with a good performance in Kingston. I could talk about other potential changes, but there won't be any (and wouldn't have been even if Stuart Clark hadn't dug Australia out of a hole, or did the Windies just fall in a deeper one?) so I won't bother.

The Windies have axed spinner Amit Jaggernauth after taking 1/96 in 23 overs on debut, with left arm spinner Sulieman Benn the sole spinner in the squad for this game, and no certainty to play with the likely return of strike bowler Jerome Taylor and solid all round performance from bowling all rounder Darren Sammy in Jamaica. Brenton Parchment was disappointing in his first test in the Caribbean, and Xavier Marshall has been plucked from the Jamaican 2nd XI after passing 50 just twice in first class cricket since his mid-2005 Test debut. They could be the opening partnership if Gayle fails his fitness test and Devon Smith drops down the order to dislodge a very unlucky Runako Morton or Darren Sammy, or they could both be sitting on the sidelines with Gayle and Smith to open.

West Indies XIV: *Chris Gayle, Brenton Parchment, Xavier Marshall, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Runako Morton, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Devon Smith, Dwayne Bravo, +Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Daren Powell, Sulieman Benn, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards

Re: Australia in the West Indies

Second Test - West Indies vs Australia at North Sound, Antigua

The first test proved to be a lot better contest than what was anticipated with West Indies really taking it up to Australia for most of the game until a final day collapse saw them fall short by 95 runs, a margin which was bigger than what it should have been.

The first test saw the bowlers dominate with Stuart Clark, Brett Lee, Fidel Edwards, Daren Powell and Dwayne Bravo causing the batters all sorts of grief out in the middle. This ground, named the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, has never hosted a test although it did host a number of World Cup games last year so both teams go in unaware of what might happen during the course of this game.

West Indies will be boosted by their good performance and despite losing, they know that if they play well, they are capable of giving Australia a real challenge. West Indies' spinner, Amit Jaggernauth has been dropped which leaves Sulieman Benn as the only recognised spinner in the team. The Windies may even go into the second test without a spinner as Jerome Taylor looks to break back into the line-up and Chris Gayle's groin looks as if it will be okay to play. Xavier Marshall comes into the squad despite being in some very average form domestically, I'm not sure why he's been picked to play. If he and Gayle do play, Devon Smith may drop down the order which means either Darren Sammy or Runako Morton may miss out despite being two of the Windies best players in Kingston. Marshall's inclusion however remains a long-shot at best.

There's only once change for Australia, Michael Clarke comes in for Brad Hodge. Hodge again misses out despite playing reasonably well at number five. Simon Katich gets another crack at opening despite faling both times in the last test with the rest of the side taking their places as normal.

The first test at Kingston saw a real arm-wrestle for the ascendency before Australia prevailed on the last day of the test. This game too promises to be an engaging one after the West Indies took it up to Australia the first time around. Things are looking on the up for the Caribbean, can they go one better this time or will Australia prove to be too good once again?

West Indies XIV: *Chris Gayle, Brenton Parchment, Xavier Marshall, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Runako Morton, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Devon Smith, Dwayne Bravo, +Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Daren Powell, Sulieman Benn, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards (3 to be omitted)
