Been a while since last post... all the Australians must be mourning
Australia lose the series 2-0, but the score line doesn't really show just how close fought that series was. They are two very even sides, plus the series should have been a four match one, meaning the last two would probably once again been riveting and close fought. Cricket fans have been let down here by the scheduling of this series.
Good signs for both sides I think from that series. With India being notoriously strong in India and Australia very strong at home, I don't think it's going out on a limb to say Australia would probably bring home a series in Australia if they played again now.
Now onto what should have been a three match ODI series that has now turned into a two match series due to the first being rained out. Both sides are resting players, particularly Australia with three front-runners out for the rest of the series. So lots of debutantes to get a first look at the two best ODI sides in the world currently... let's see who has the greater depth.
Australia did match it for much of the series (if you can call it that!), but in the end the difference(s) were clear. Our inability to break set-in partnerships, combined with our inability to form them ourselves was glaringly obvious. As happens every time we play in India, the openers set us up well, only for the middle-order to capitulate to either spin or reverse swing. '
The list of offenders is much the same - but of course no-one will be dropped from the side. Down to No.5 in world rankings now, but the selectors will accept that as near enough, good enough.
India are very good at limited overs cricket too, so don't count on our being able to bully them with big hitting and fast bowling. Doesn't count for as much over there.
Why are all these players being rested? Is it a sign of this form of the game's irrelevance?
